I don't surf personally, but my best friends did back in high school. I spent many summers at Atlantic Beach/Pine Knoll Shores/Emerald Isle, and I also lived in SoCal for 4 years.

As far as I know the OuterBanks (Nags Head, Cape Hatteras) probably have consistently the best waves, although getting out there takes longer. Atlantic Beach and Wrightsville semi-decent as well, though nowhere on the East Coast is comparable to California. Florida has the least waves.

Water temps in summer get up to 78 degrees or warmer. Atlantic Beach faces due south so a southwest wind will create the best waves, and it varies all day, every day.

There are many great surf shops up and down the NC coast. Look them up online and give 'em a call. They will know what they're talking about, unlike me.

NC waves are small dude. you see the teeny boppers surfing a 1 foot swell of white water here, The only exception is before a hurricane and then you jump off the end of the piers to catch one. Coast is shallow a long way out kills the good swell.

Went to CA, seen the waves, went to FL...seen them too, went to NC....small ones (except when a hurricane is coming, then you will have a blast )
If you want waves like CA, I guess you have to move to Hawaii....lol (Maui to be exact....seen the most awesome waves there!)

Default What Surf?

ThreePutt,
Been back here for 14 years now, lived in Santa Cruz. When you can actualy find the beach, the waves are very small. I guess that Alaskan current is good for something after all. Wait until, Hurricaine season, then it's "Surf's Up" Fer Sure!
