I just read that the Wake county taxes were going up. I also note on some home lisitng it states no city taxes-does each city (ie, cary, apex, etc) have a tax rate too and who decides?
Here where I live the school proposes a budget and the entire community that goes to that schools approves it or not and that is how our school taxes are decided and what funds them..
The county just determines what they need and that cost gets spread among everyone.
They play around here I believe because taxes are the rate X 1/4 % of your home (the home price they assess) and they change the rate ( there is no ryhme or reason to the rate -it just goes up) so you can't win...Garbage collection, etc comes out of the town taxes.
A few years back people complained about the taxes and they did an entire reassment and lowered the percent of the home value but increased the rate, no body won, well except the tax collector!!!
Cars, we must register with DMV and pay a feee every 2 years which is very simialr to your fees.
You have to register cars here every year. I think the tag that goes on the back of the car is about $28.00 or so a year. That is for a private vehicle. Once you get into farm trucks and other over weight vehicles it is different. But about three months after you get the tag for the car, you will get a property bill based on the value of the vehicle. I believe you have 30 days to contest the value they based it on if you are driving say a 2006 car but it has 100,000 miles on it instead of something more in line with the actual model. This can be done through an appraiser or at the tax office in the county you live in. The inspection in Greene County is only $9.50 a year but we don't have the emission controls options here which you would have to have in Wake, Mecklenburg and other larger city towns. Do not let the inspection slip up on you because if you get caught now running an out of date inspection sticker it is $250.00 automatically. They don't care if you were out of town, in ICU or what. If you fail to pay the property taxes when you go to renew the tag the following year, you will be blocked from doing so until you pay the taxes for the prior year. If you get rid of a vehicle, be sure to get a bill of sale from the buyer and take it to the tax office so they won't be trying to bill you for a car you no longer have. This can be a nightmare let me tell you. They attempted to garnish my wages for one that I bought my daughter in 1991. Since I am disabled that didn't work so then they were going after our state tax refund. But since I didn't pay anything in because again I am disabled they couldn't get it from my husband's refund. I just out and out refused to pay it because I know I had paid it. That is another story. We had two employees arrested down there for embezzling so that is why I refused to do anything else about it. Normally I would have just paid it but it got down to the principle of the thing.
