Hello,

we are thinking of relocating to NC from Los Angeles.

We have 2 kids (one is 2 and a half, the other is 6 months old) so we need good schools near.

We are looking for houses that are max 300-315k, with at least half and acre, more would be better.

We would like to be maximum 2hours away from Raleigh, which areas are the best for families around there? which cities should we avoid at all cost?

What are the city codes there for dogs? We have 4 (which is the max allowed here)

Thank you!

Then tighten that up to 20 minutes and join the throngs who relocate there.

You probably want to peruse the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill forum for areas near Raleigh. There are TONS of threads, but it would be helpful to provide a little more about what you're looking for--urban, suburban or rural, how many BR, where you'd be commuting to, etc?

There isn't any city to "avoid at all costs", though all cities have better areas and areas you would want to steer away from (like anywhere else). It really depends on what you're looking for and what you want to avoid.

If you have a detached house, there aren't really any rules about dogs, though there might be rules about not letting them run unleashed without a fence. That kind of thing would probably be more of a HOA thing than a "city code".

Read the many questions people have already asked, and elaborate more on specifics. Your question "where should I live?" is still pretty general.

Have you visited the area? That's a first step, of course--once you've seen the area and can narrow down your search, is when this board becomes most helpful.

Clayton, Garner, Willow Springs, Fuquay-Varina are some good suburbs of Raleigh to check out. Knightdale is not also not a bad choice either. Southern and Eastern Wake County, from what I know, has cheaper real estate than Cary and Western and Northern Wake County. There is some development off NC HWY 42 in Clayton near Flowers Crossroads that would be worth checking out too.

It would be helpful to know some information on the type of job the wage-earner would need. I'd suggest Smithfield if he needs retail, restaurant or trucking jobs. There are also plenty of construction opportunities in the growing areas like Clayton and Fuquay-Varina. There are also tech and medical jobs in the closer-in parts of the Triangle.

As far as areas to avoid within 2 hours of Raleigh, those are Roanoke Rapids, Rocky Mount and Lumberton for a variety of reasons.
