NEW YORK - New Yorkers are a polite bunch.

No, really, they are. So says Reader’s Digest.

The magazine sent reporters “undercover” to 36 cities, in 35 countries, to measure courtesy. New York was the only American city on the list.

I just heard that on the news. Congratulations to them. And who says that being nice is a dead trait?

I was surprised. Ofcoruse, it's was only for REALLY big cites. NY with over 8million people was the only city in America large enough for the study.

I am even more surprised at how low some of these other cities are. In Bombay, only 32% of people held the door! As opposed to 80% in NYC. How rude! I've always heard that Asian cities were a little more hustle and bustle and not very persional, but that's ridiculous!

You're right. Compare NYC with 8mil to another city with similar population, and that may change a bit. But NYC is the city that never sleeps so I guess the night owls are courteous as well.

Growing up in NY all my life, I have come to experience both sides of it. Guess that can happen in other areas.

I did find back in '04 when we last visited NYC that it was a much different place from the one that I saw in 1975. Even the cops were friendly! Of course it may be because I was 19 in '75 and 19 year olds don't get the same respect
