Ok, after reading the thread on the Lawson family murders I thought maybe we could hear some other NC ghost stories and legends. Also I would love input on good ghost walks in various towns around NC. My husband and I go to Beaufort every year and the ghost walk there is really good.

Smile more stories...please

Hiya Hap,

Been there...seen that. My husband and I have driven up to the lookout on 181 a few times. Once we thought we may have seen the lights...but I guess that's why it remains such a mystery. You never actually know if you did or didn't.

I really hoped that this thread would draw more response. I can't be the only one interested in this kinda thing.

There is also a Ghost Walk in Wilmington and they have a Haunted Pub there as well. Liz

Yes, the Ghost Walk in Beaufort is one of the best around.

Beaufort NC Tours - Outer Banks of North Carolina - Real Estate or Beaufort NC Ghost Walk

There is great books on carolina mysteries and stories from the mountains to the coast at bookstores.

The story of the Devil’s Trampling Ground.

If you are traveling through North Carolina in western Chatham County, you may not have enough nerve to travel out about 10 miles east of Siler City to a secluded wooded area. Here prior to 1800 settlers came upon a strange sight: A ring 40 feet in diameter surrounded by a worn path one foot wide. In the center of this unusual ring is nice wonderful green grass and other plants the same for growth outside the worn path.

The settlers soon learned that if they placed anything on this path such as rocks, tree limbs or other objects the next morning the path was clear of all debris. The debris was pushed aside and could be seen outside the worn area.

Today, the same experience is happening to anyone that dares to visit what the settlers referred to as the Devil’s Trampling Ground. Many hunters during rabbit season, in the fall and winter, have taken their dogs along, however, once the dogs happen upon this mysterious circle they tuck their tails between their legs and slowly move away. No hunting dog will even get close to the worn path.

No one has ever seen the mysterious person or beast that creates this path in late dark night, but it is believed to be the haunt of Foul Fiend. It has been told that he walks around and around the circle with his head bent low with a powerful expression on his face. This is what they call Satan and believe that he is here to devise his plans against mankind and just before daybreak, he flies off just like a bat disappears before sunrise. The thought of many is that his feet have scorched the grass so it will never grow back. Whether he still appears and contemplates other disasters for people of earth or whether his fiery feet have caused nothing to grow back will forever remain a mystery.

Lawson family murders?? Eeeek! I have to read up on that thread. I just came back from a visit to Waxhaw- it was beautiful up there! The atmosphere seems fitting for ghost stories and legends like that.

Don't know if she's a ghost, but Frankie Silver was a convicted murderer in mysterious circumstances.

Blue Ridge Country: 1831 Death of Teen Couple (Silver) In North Carolina Mountains (http://www.blueridgecountry.com/silver/index.html - broken link)

Charlie Silver is actually the 1st cousin 4 times removed (according to the relationship calculator of my genealogical software) to my husband. Liz
