Carolinahome.com is a good resource for rentals. Matthews is a nice little town just southeast of Charlotte. There are lots of gyms for working out; the dogs could be a problem as some landlords don't allow pet but that's something you can find out in the rental info.

Matthews is outside of Charlotte so the lifestyle is basically what you make it. If you want nightlife and the urban experience you can drive to Uptown; if you prefer you can create a simpler environment.

I will second what I have found out: if you're looking for a faster pace, Charlotte will deliver that more than other areas. You will still need to adjust to a slower pace where people still take the time to be nice to each other.

Be really sure that you won't miss the sort of life that is in NYC. I know that some folks just thrive on that and are miserable when they leave it.

I moved here from MA but I was never a city kid anyway and I absolutely love it here between Greensboro and Durham!

The Matthews area is nice. You are close enough to the city to enjoy it, but not living in it. I think you will be able to find what you are looking for in this area. Many of the towns surrounding Matthews are great as well.

Like everyone has said people here are a little slower in the way they do things. If you are looking for a little less stress, then this is definitely a great choice.
