Sorry if this has already been posted... I'm looking to relocate to either the Asheville or Chapel Hill areas from Ann Arbor, MI - a place where my BA gets me a job as a secretary. I'm wondering what the economy is like in these areas. My partner is in retail/services with some college, but no degree. I know this is somewhat vague, but can you find work that pays enough to live without a degree?
You'll see a lot of discussion on the Asheville/western North Carolina economy if you go through the archives. The consensus is that the job market's tough there because the economy is geared toward retirees and the hospitality industry, and housing prices are on the high side. It might be best to have something lined up before you move there.
Sad to say, but if you are in Asheville with a BA like you would be, you would have to consider yourself fortunate to land a job as a secretary. This area does just not have much for white collar jobs. Like was stated, I wouldn't move here without a decent job. If I lose my white collar software industry job, I will have no choice but to move from here. Pay here is also low, so keep that in mind.

There is a lot of competition for jobs in Chapel Hill due to the high volume of residents who hold advanced degrees...Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, NC State. Asheville on the other hand is basically a service oriented employment area.

Thanks a ton!
You might do better to consider other areas like Greensboro, Greenville or the Charlotte metro area. Best of luck to you
