It is an Army town, no doubt about that, but it is also a town that has a solid core of civilian residents. There have been great efforts in the last 15 years or so to revitalize downtown so that it is now a great eclectic mix of boutiques and mom and pop eateries, as well as loft housing and condos above those. The historic Haymount district has some great old homes within walking distance to downtown, as well as parks and other amenities.

There is also a very active theater, the Cape Fear Regional Theater, that brings in actors from more prominent shows - they even have an awesome amphitheater on the Cape Fear River, where there are festivals and such.

There's also an active night life scene, because there is still a large military population as well.

My dad retired from the Army in 96 while stationed at Bragg, and my parents chose to stay there, so they've been actively involved in the community for the last almost 20 years.

Feel free to pm me for more specifics!

Fayetteville has been wonderful for the short time we've lived here. Last weekend was the first really HOT weekend of spring, my daughter has been swimming all weekend, got sunburned Saturday not too badly at least. I'm from CT and not used to having to break out the sunscreen in MARCH!
We're moving to Charlotte soon, will be putting our house on the market in about a week (anyone looking to buy in the best schools in the county?).
If you want a "real" mall you need to go to Raleigh/Durham area (about an hour and a half from where we live in Fayetteville), though there is a basic mall with some standard stores, and every chain store in the strip malls around the mall area. I'd have been happy to stay here in Fayetteville, but my husband's job here was not what he wanted to he's relocating to a better job in Charlotte.

i lived there for about 2 months before i decided to move somewhere more tropical, with a bit more of life, so i moved to an island in the carribean because i was sick and tired of the "ghost town feel" of fayetteville. the school system is good but its pretty much dead. the mall is always empty, theres no one outside having fun. i found it dreadfully boring but very pretty

I was a bit intimidated when we started looking (about this time last year) to move to Fayetteville. I narrowed my list down to 4 acceptable high schools:
Jack Britt, Terry Sanford (eventually tossed that one out as we didnt' want to live in the center of Fayetteville itself, still a good school, but expensive housing), Cape Fear and Southview (considered Cape Fear as an alternate). Most of the elementary schools leading into those HS's are good, and in my experience good schools come with good housing/neighborhood options. We ended up in Jack Britt schools, with Stoney Point as our Elementary....supposed to be the best in the county, my experience at the Elemtary school has been great!
