We are looking to PCS to Pope AFB this summer. We are looking for neighborhoods with an easy commute to the back gate (Manchester?) of Pope. I had heard Southern Pines was a great neighborhood and not too bad of a commute, but others have told me it's quite far. We have narrowed it down to Sanford and N. Fayetteville area - but want to know if we should include Southern Pines/Whispering Pines/Pinehurst when looking to buy? Thanks!

I just got a job at Ft bragg and I moved to Holly Springs, it's not too far and is a heck of a lot better than any of the towns you mentioned.

How far away is he willling to, and allowed to, commute? I'd stay out of Fayetteville no matter what part.

Well, Fayettville is not so bad as some folks will claim. I moved back to the area when I retired last year. There are plenty of nice places to live a lot closer than Southern Pines. That would be a long commute to Pope for no real need. When I was stationed at Pope I lived in Hope Mills the commute with traffic was about 15 minutes including driving though Fort Bragg. You will find plenty of places to live in the 87 corridor up toward Sanford and in the Overhills area. Give the Fayetteville area a chance before deciding. I know I could show you a few places you would like.

If you would like some more info about the area send me a direct message. I'd be happy to help.

You might also consider Sanford. Just do a search of the forum here, but a lot of staff(civilian and military) at Ft. Bragg live in Sanford and find the commute to be a non-issue, but love the smaller town(city) feel and low cost of living.

Good luck!
Al
