I will be moving to NC within the next year but am really have a hard time with picking between Raleigh and Charlotte. I am sure this has been posted many times so I sorry for bringing it up again but I need opinions. What are the differences and opinions on both cities for better or worse. Which is better??? Thank you!

When I lived in Raleigh, I liked Raleigh better.

Now that I live in Charlotte, I'm pretty sure I liked Raleigh better. It's not the place though... its the people.

You really need to visit both places to see which one will be a better fit. They are NOT the same at all. I have lived in both and prefer Raleigh to Charlotte.

I too have lived in Raleigh as well as Charlotte and I like Charlotte better.

Like the others have said, you should try to visit both cities and see which one is a better fit for you.

Good luck with your decision!

No offense but "visit both and then decide" first off is not always possible for people living a good dist away and second, will only give a very brief glimpse of each and not much of a real feel anyway IMO....so to say "come check it out" isn't very helpful.

BW, PM me if you want some Raleigh opinions, but I can't speak to Charlotte much....also if you do search on the NC forums you will find TONS of threads and replies about the pros/cons of each.

It may not be feasible, but visiting both is the best way to compare. I live in Raleigh and have spent a lot of time in Charlotte visiting friends. They are both excellent places to live and I think a person could be equally happy in both locations. A couple things to consider:

1) Both Raleigh and Charlotte have a downtown component and a more suburban component. If you are comparing downtown living in Charlotte to downtown living in Raleigh I think Charlotte has the edge as it is much further along in that regard than Raleigh. If you are comparing suburban living between the two areas then I don't see the two being much different. For example, the suburban Ballantyne area of Charlotte reminds me very much of the subruban North Raleigh area or Cary which is a bedroom communty adjacent to Raleigh.

2) Speaking of "bedroom communities", Raleigh and Charlotte metros each contain such communities which are part of their respective metro areas. For example in Raleigh is located in Wake county, but you will find many of the people who move to Wake county consider living in the other incorporated areas of Wake county like Cary, Wake Forest, Holy Springs, Fuquay Varina, Morrisville ect. in addition to Raleigh. I think you will find a similar situation on the Charlotte forum in that many of the people who call that area home do not actually live "in" Charlotte. Actually I have friends who work in Charlotte but actually live just across the boarder in South Carolina. So clearly moving to both areas requires more than just a straight comparison of Raleigh to Charlotte or vice versa.

3) In my experience I find the deciding factor for most people is that they move to one or the other depending on where they find the best job opportunity.

4) Lastly, take everything you read on this forum (including what I say) with a grain of salt. There is no filter on here that eliminates bad advice. If you linger on the forum long enough you will start to realize some people have more experience and provide more useful information than others.

~ Good Luck!

I say again. There is more to NC than Charlotte or Raleigh. A lot more, and in many people's eyes, better.

Dig and study a little, grasshopper.

Depends what you're into. If you are a sports person you might like Charlotte (stay true to your home teams though!) a bit more. Think about the type of area you want to live in, age/family status, surrounding areas, schools for you or family if applicable, etc

What do you want out of your area?
