I am planning to buy property now and relocate in the next couple of years. I'm considering areas that would be within a 30 to 45 minute drive to Charlotte. I like rural spots and recently drove through some small towns West and North of Charlotte. I want simple living, back to basics. Something that concerned me when I was doing a search for demographics is that burglary was higher than the national average in several of the towns I had visited. What a disappointment. I have heard how if property is left unattended, people sometimes return to find their belongings missings. I know there are no guarantees but does anyone have a comforting response to this?
Western Lincoln County sounds like what you're looking for...very low crime...lots of farmland, simple living....45 minutes to Mecklenburg County....15 minutes to Hickory....
I'm afraid the days of leaving homes unlocked are long gone.... anywhere.
I agree with western Lincoln County from among the counties you listed.
Also - it's a little further away from Charlotte, but not much - I would take a look at Rutherford County. The added benefit there is being in closer proximity to Asheville and the mountains (my personal bias showing) for day trips.
Thanks for the input. Rutherfordton sounds very nice. What was interesting though is that this website shows it gets more snow than even Hickory which is further to the north.

Well, that still is hardly any snow, LOL. Some years that area gets no snow at all. Usually, it is 3-5" at most and then goes away in a few days. Of course, there have been extraordinary snow storms if you look at the last 30 years. But as far as dealing w/ a lot of snow/ice - nope.

True, during this past winter season, Raleigh received more snow than Asheville, according to the National Weather Service.

I'm a couple of miles west of the Gaston County line in Cleveland County. The neighborhood is very quiet.
