This had been a good thread until someone had to divert it to a defence of the Confederacy, which was a creation of Southern agri-capitalists who needed massive slave labour, and a demagogic political class who represented the interests of those rich, selfish planters. The Confederate war dead are to be honoured unreservedly. Traitors like Jefferson Davis and Alexander Stephens should be held in everlasting infamy.
