Yes, the Crow was filmed in Wilmington NC.

It is also where Brandon Lee lost his life after an accident on the set of the Crow.

Richard Gere was filming a movie at Topsail Beach in 2007 I think, while my wife and I were visiting the beach. Not sure what the name of it was.

The home used and some of the scenes was filmed in Rodanthe during the month of May 07
They used helicopters to blow sand onto the road to make it appear more desolate. Security was high so I couldnt get to view any filming going on.

Are we only talking about "big budget" movies?

If not, a lot of independents have and continue to be made in many genres across the state.

"Fist Full of Brains" of the "B movie zombie genre" was produced in Sanford and shot in the Smithfield area, and its predecessor "Second Death" was shot in Sanford as well.

BILLY BATHGATE was filmed in Wilmington and Hamlet. My Dad and Granddad collect old cars and some were used in background scenes.

Parts of the racing scenes in this movie were filmed in Wilkes County on highways 18 and 421. One man ended up in the film accidently and many in the community knew him. Everybody was talking about a local farmer that many people knew. He had probably never seen a movie and ended up in one.

I don't know if the stat still stands, with the relative lack of movies filmed in the last few years, but NC was the third largest film site (wilmington area mostly) behind only California and New York.
