I'm new to NC - living on an extremely tight budget and I try to figure out my grocery bill before I get to the register so I spend what I have (incl taxes) but don't go over.....

any ideas where on the web I can find information on NC taxes? There are various letters (Y, T, X, R) next to the costs of the items on my sales slip but there seems to be no one who knows what these letters designate

thanks in advance

This website should help. Basically food is exempt unless it is prepared by the grocer, pre made salads, rotissery chickens etc. So any of your cleaning supplies, sundries etc are taxable. Do cost comparison shopping, grocery store compared to Target etc. My favorite cereal is $2 cheaper at Target and Target takes coupons! I actually keept track of coupon savings for a year and saved hundreds of dollars. Good luck!

Does this mean that the regular grocery stores don't take coupons?

Yes, the regular grocery stores do take coupons. A lot of people don't realize that Target accepts coupons. Not sure about Wal-Mart because I don't shop there.

Sorry if I confused you Weis, yes the grocery stores do take manufacturer coupons. I was just trying to tell Hen to price compare the grocery store to Target as I find that Target can be cheaper on sundries etc since they are on a tight budget. I live in So Cal, in the process of trying to move to Charlotte. They have Harris Teeter, Winn Dixie and Food Lion grocery stores. Harris Teeter seems to be pretty nice although I was just following my sis in law around and not paying attention to price or anything, I was on vacation.

Thanks nascar nancy...it's funny because here on LI, Target is cheaper for some items and not another-what I have learned is you really need to know the prices as even the BJ's and costco's are now always cheaper, alot depends on sales, one week target has something and the next the supermarket...

Walmart in Arizona takes coupons so I would think it would be the same. They don't double the coupon..do supermarkets there "double" coupons? Glad to know the local markets do take them however.
