Mandatory? It's just common sense. Get together and work out a compromise. Instead both sides chose to fight it out in the media.

They have displayed dispicable behavior the last six weeks. The republicans chose to try and use this as a trump card, which was just wrong in the first place. And the Gov refuses to budge on anything and throw out sound bites in the press to just make matters worse instead of sitting down and working through it in a reasonable way.

The republicans are trying to cut the budget (which has to be done) but the Gov wants no part of it. Yes, it is completely wrong of them to use EB as a bargaining chip and that was a boneheaded play. But the Gov has not helped matters at all with her shananigans, and lack of action.

Under the circumstances, I think the Governor handled this as well as it could have been handled. There's been a number of critics of the Governor on this thread, but although I have repeatedly invited individuals to do so, NOBODY has been able to offer up any of their own workable ideas.

So, you got any ideas of how this should have gone down?
First of all my friend, I have an honor roll student of 3 yrs running at coltrane webb ele in concord. Second I and my wife servered as proctors during the state of nc eog testing. Third, the revised budget, would save alot of schools in my aera from being redistricted.

And as for how it should have went down, the gov (miss sweet perdue) iyo,, should have stepped up 5 weeks ago and said what the he.. she would accept or just shut up. I nstead she,s spent the last 5 weeks wondering around every corner of nc taking credit for every job that was created. And her solution, SEND ME A CLEAN BILL.... THATS IT NO PROACTIVE RESPONCE TO GET IT

BTW MY SON HAS AND ALL STAR GAME SATURDAY AT GIBSON FEILD IN CONCORD AT 9.00 AM IF YOU WOULD CARE TO TALK MORE ABOUT IT.

I am told that the Governor does have the power to call "mandatory" meetings, and that this was a regular practice of Jim Hunt, by my elders who were present and keeping up with State politics during his tenure. However, I personally do not know what "powers" the Governor has nor what limitations are in place, it is also possible that they have been changed since Jim Hunt.

Sorry if my last post offended anyone, I,m just burnt out to the limit. I know in a perfect world, a clean bill should have passed no questions asked, but in NC, its not a perfect world. Just consider the facts of the past 6 weeks, yes a clean bill should have been passed, BUT, when it became apparent that wasnt going to happen, steps should have been taken by miss perdue to make it happen to the best of her ability, I didnt see that happen.

We're flirting with the Off Topic Zone, but I guess this is related EB and the actions of our Governor relating to it.

Per Article III, Section 5 - Duties of the Governor, the Governor does reserve the right to call extra sessions in the General Assembly under extraordinary conditions and with the advice of the Council of State (in other words, she must consult with her advisors). She must state the purposes as to why she is calling the extra sessions.

Now define "extraordinary". Getting EB cut off for 40K+ NC residents would be extraordinary in my opinion. And I'd expect such a concerned public official like herself to take full advantage of the public relations bonanza she'd have by proclaiming, "I stand with the unemployed and I'm calling for extra sessions because the unemployed can no longer go one more day without their benefits!!!" Usually, politicians are good at taking advantage of crises, or as some would say, "never let a good crisis go to waste". Bev, not so much.
