I moved here in Feb. and I live in Clayton. We have no troubles at all here and I work in Selma, no problems there either. I was worried too but you will be fine. I'm black, hubby is white. If anything other black folks stare more than others!

Default racism is EVERYWHERE!!!

i'm puerto rican and grew up in a pretty rough area in brooklyn, ny. lived on long island for 11 years after i got married, in an overwhelmingly white neighborhood. i just moved to union county in Nov. 2006., to an overwhelmingly white community. by and large, i can't say that i've experienced OVERT racism anywhere i've ever been. i think sometimes, the baggage people bring with them will influence how they perceive other people's interactions w/ themselves.

andrew's question is absolutely valid and i didn't think it was bigoted or inappropriate for him to have those concerns. let's not forget, the kkk still thrives in many parts of the south. my sister-in-law is black and has family spread out through many parts of the south (Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, N. Carolina and Florida) and she has told me incidents of her own experience and those of family members which have made it very clear that people of color are just not welcome in some parts.

obviously, this doesn't mean that EVERYONE gets painted w/ the same brush. as of matter of fact, my sister-in-law, who lives in Brooklyn, w/ my brother and their 3 children, has a high degree of sensitivity to the race issue because her children are products of a "mixed" marriage. and even living in the north, in NYC of all places, probably one of the most liberal towns you'll ever find in the USA, she has concerns for her children.

so, i think that the original post would have been applicable had Mr. Washington been thinking of relocating to ANYWHERE except those cities most people recognize as being liberal or sprawling, like L.A., Chicago, Detroit, D.C., NYC, Miami, San Francisco or Atlanta. the original question would have been valid if Andrew were contemplating a move to northern NY, where the folks upstate don't share many of the same views as those residing closer to the Big Apple. In central and northern NY, the folks are pretty similar in demographics to what pollsters consider "middle america."

having lived in the NY metro area all my life (until moving to the Charlotte area a few months ago) i'm actually surprised by the number of inter-racial couples i come across. and this is from a person who's dated asian women, caribbean women, latin women, jewish women, white women, black women and indian women (from India). i've enjoyed them all and think there is beauty in all races.

i consider myself pretty liberal w/ very few hang-ups and even I do a double-take when i see a black & white couple when i'm out and about. i think i see it more in the charlotte area than i did in NY. i thought his question was relevant and practical and it was similar to the question i asked of my realtor when i was researching the move to this area (Charlotte), except my question was more about how well people from the north are being received by natives considering the great influx of outsiders to the Carolinas.

Here's a state ranking of race-related hate crimes per capita based on FBI crime data in 2004. New Jersey (1) was the highest and Alabama (50) was the lowest. North Carolina was ranked #42.
