So we had a contractor out this morning, getting bids on having our gravel driveway re-rocked. At around 130 feet long, it's amost a small road and something we have to do every 5-7 years. We expect an *owie* as far as the expense, more like a GAWK this year. It's been more a "that's the price, take it or leave it" from other contractors, the one we had out this morning got into an extended yarn with Dh over building costs. The small guys are having a hard time of it, it seems. The latest contractor had expense sheets from the last 3 years laid out to explain why the cost of having our driveway redone is about triple the cost from 5 years ago. Suppliers of materials are raising their prices; a ton of rock went up $5 in the last 6 months. That might not seem like a lot, unless it takes 50 tons to redo a driveway. Then there's the diesel to fuel the truck to deliver the rock and fuel for the tractor work. He said that translates into more for concrete as well. He noticed that we had a new garage and asked how much the cement cost. We had that done last year; this year the cost would have been almost 1/3 more. 4x8 sheets of plywood -- his supplier has already notified him that the price will go up by about $5/sheet in August. Hurricane season, dontcha know.

We've had thoughts about downsizing our place, or rebuilding on a different spot with a configuration more suitable to our needs. Now we're rethinking that. Just like land prices, building a house about 1/2 the size of the one we live in now would probably cost as much as what we paid for this place. I think we're staying put
