Pinehurst VS Southern Pines VS Whispering Pines? (Sanford, New Bern: daycare, Home Depot)

We're looking to retire withing the next couple of years, and have have a decision to make- Retire to the Sandhills area, or the New Bern area.
We visited Pinehurst about 5-6 years ago, but were only there for 1-1/2 days and really did not get to see all we should have. We are planning another trip within the next few months.
One good thing- I see that Southern Pines has a nice Dog Park (perfect for our Yellow Lab), and from what I can see on the web, Southern Pines appears to be a nice a nice small town; Not to say that the others aren't just as nice.
Anyway, would appreciate the benefits and drawbacks of each town.
Southern Pines is a very cute little town. Lots of people come to this area to retire. Even if you don't buy in Southern Pines there are other cute towns in this area. A bit of a drive to a BIG city, but easily doable if you wanted. There is the railroad too if you want to travel.
We have chosen to settle down in this area do to the small town feel and central location for mountains or beaches.
Sanford also has a wonderful Dog school!
I haven't been to New Bern for 10 years... Don't remember anything about it.
My mom is originally from Southern Pines. The folks took me there when I was like three or four, so I really don't remember anything about my visit, but my mom, grandparents and aunts and uncles all loved it.
So it must be a real nice, quiet little town. But if you really like golf, then I guess Pinehurst is the place to go. Dunno anything about Whispering Pines, though.
Pinehurst is really almost like a little "Resort village" with a very picaresque, quiant downtown, but not really as much in the way of "everyday" things like grocery stores, Home Depots, etc. People who live in the Sandhills end up doing their daily errands among all of the different towns there.
Another place you might look is Seven Lakes; my dad has lived there for almost 20 years and it's largely retired folks. Still very much a part of the Sandhills area, close to Southern Pines, Pinehurst, etc.
Southern Pines has the most varied community and almost everything(food, shopping, arts, etc) is located there or in Aberdeen. If you are family oriented at all, I would suggest SP over the others. It can cost a bit more when buying, but has many areas with large lots.
And if you ever have a need for a pet, please visit us at Sandhills Pet Resort...boarding, daycare, grooming, baths, de-shedding, etc.
