I have heard over and over about how nice NC is from various co-workers, friends, family, etc. I am married with 2 small children (3 and newborn). I am an engineer for a huge telecommunications company. My wife and I have been considering moving out of the NYC area. If anyone can give me their recommendations on towns/cities that may be right for a young family of four with of of course decent job opportunities that would be great.

Thanks

Because I am not a North Carolina resident I can't speak with the voice of authority however following the posters on this forum one comes to get some general impressions. For the kind of work you do it would likely be best for you to gravitate towards the larger cities like Raleigh and Charlotte. That said, you have a raft of options as there are numerous communities near the major cities where you could live. If you review some of the threads already posted here you will find numerous posts that address your request. With small children you will be looking for the best schools and that issue has been thoroughly covered. You will however most likely get more responses from "natives" who can tell you first-hand what their feelings are about this very subject. Good luck.

I agree with the triangle area. Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill and Charlotte. Charlotte is a large in banking while I think the triangle is largely into technology. Good luck.

^Agreed.
Also, if you're coming from NYC, then even NC's biggest cities will still seem like a "small town" to you...even if you moved right into the heart of downtown Raleigh, Charlotte or Durham.
So keep that in mind...everything's relative. When we say "big city" it's not the same as when you do!

Thanks for the responses so far. I am checking old posts as we speak. Any NC natives know any average to above average priced communities around the "triangle" area?

Hello,
I live in Hickory, NC. Corning Telecomunications is located here, if you would like to reside in a smaller city.

I've always lived in the Charlotte area and love it here. Though the financial industry is big here, it's by no means the only big player. If you're looking at specific communities, Concord, Mooresville, Belmont, and Ft. Mill are great. Very safe, great schools, great access to Charlotte, VERY family oriented, and recreational assets. The Raleigh area's really good too. You can't go wrong with either area. Good Luck!!!
