Mt. Airy is beautiful, has 4 distinct seasons. There are tons of hispanics, jobs are low paying. Cost of living is low compared to the cities. We are just now getting some better restaurants, like Chili's and Ruby Tuesday's, lots of eating places, fast food, they love to spend money on food. I dunno people either are very well off, retired and there are beautiful houses or they are working class and don't make much money. Many commute to Winston-Salem, much better money. I love the country, proximity to mountains and beaches and shopping.

Not really over-crowded, it's busy during lunch and dinner hours. Walmart sucks just about any time except before 8am. The crime rate is low, the people are very nice. Downtown is busy on the weekends with tourist who want Snappy-Lunch and all of that Mayberry stuff. A few festivals during the year downtown. An arts council and theater. New and vastly growing Vineyards, just gorgeous. What else?

Not a lot of developement, one condo sub-division, mainly single family homes, plenty of land and open space. We are lacking retaill here our mall consists of Belk, Penny's (awful) and small shops, small shops downtown, Goodys, Lowes, big lots. all of the cheap stores. There are a few nice stores though. It has a very hometown feel. We attract tourists because of the 'Mayberry" theme , but no traffic jams or anything like that. Good Luck. I am glad to answer more questions tomorrow. Good luck southbound!!

Mt. Airy is a nice area for sure, BUT, it is no where near western NC! Are you sure that is the area you want to go to, or do you really want western NC?

Just wanted to make sure you didn't think you'd be living high up in the mountains or anything in Mt. Airy Though you can see mountains in the distance from there.
