If you were assigned to bring a typical North Dakota dessert to a party would you bring Kuchen or something else?

And do you have a recipe for me for a simple but delicious North Dakota dessert for a mediocre cook???

Many thank you's...!

Sour cream raisin bars--never had them before I moved here, but every church cookbook here seems to have some form of the recipe.

Thanks, the raisin bars sound interesting. But I'm thinking kuchen may be more festive.

I was invited to a party to watch the movie Fargo and I'm to bring dessert. Living in North Carolina leaves me clueless about North Dakota desserts but I found out on Google that kuchen is South Dakota's state dessert, so figured maybe that was close enough.

Anyone else have suggestions??

Glorified Rice. Some people may argue in favor of some jello recipes, but Glorified Rice is without a doubt the most typically Upper Midwestern Scandinavian dessert in existence.

You could bring kuchen, but it's kind of like wearing a Santa suit to a Halloween party. Great stuff, though.

Try this one:

RASPBERRY CLOUD SALAD

1 can(s) (1 lb 5 ounces) RASPBERRY PIE FILLING
1 can(s) (14 ounce) SWEETENED CONDENSED MILK
1 can(s) (8 ounce) CRUSHED PINEAPPLE; Do Not Drain.
2 cup(s) MINIATURE MARSHMALLOWS
1 container(s) (8 ounce) COOL WHIP; Thawed.
_____

Add all ingredients to a bowl and mix by hand until combined.
Chill in the refrigerator until set.

Jello desserts are quite popular around here.

Here is another one that a lot of people make around my area of Western ND, but I'm not much of a fan of the mixture

Ambrosia Waldorf Salad

2 cups frozen cranberries, partially thawed and cut in half
1/2 cup sugar
3 cups miniature marshmallows
2 cups diced unpeeled Golden Delicious Apples
1 cup seedless green grapes (*See note)
1 (20 oz.) can pineapple tidbits, drained
1 (8 ounce) tub Cool Whip

In a large bowl, combine the cranberries and sugar; mix thoroughly.
In a 3-quart (12 cup) bowl, add the marshmallows, apples, grapes, and pineapple.
Add the cranberries; mix well.
Fold in the Cool Whip.
Cover, and chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Serves 12-14.

*Note: If using rather large grapes, cut them in half.
If the grapes are small in size, I do not bother cutting them in half.

Kuchen
(makes eight kuchen)

The Crust
1 package dry yeast
1/8 cup warm water
2 beaten eggs
11/2 cups milk
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil
4 cups flour

In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add milk, sugar, salt, eggs and vegetable oil. Mix in flour and make into dough. Let rise about one hour. Knead down and let rise again for another hour. Divide the dough into eight equal pieces. Roll each to about 1/4 inch thick and place in a greased pie pan so that the dough covers the bottom and comes about halfway up the side. Let dough rise in the pan for 15 minutes. Add a layer of thin-sliced apples, strawberries or other fruit, if desired.

The Filling
4 eggs
1 cup sugar
2 cups cream
2 cups milk
3 tablespoons flour

On the stove, heat the milk and cream together. In a large bowl, mix the sugar, flour and eggs together. Add the milk and cream mixture to the sugar, flour and eggs and return it to the stove and cook until it thickens. Pour about 3/4 of a cup of the filling mixture into each crust.

The Topping
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
1 cup butter

Mix sugar, flour and butter until it is between smooth and lumpy. Pour the topping on and bake for about 30 minutes at 350 degrees. After the kuchen comes out, let it set for 5 minutes, then remove from the pan and let it cool.
