Default Just a reminder

What is Wind Chill?
It is the temperature it "Feels like" outside and is based on the rate of heat loss from exposed skin caused by the effects of wind and cold. As the wind increases, the body is cooled at a faster rate causing the skin temperature to drop. Wind Chill does not impact inanimate objects like car radiators and exposed water pipes, because these objects cannot cool below actual air temperature.

What is Frostbite?
Frostbite is an injury to the body caused by freezing body tissue. The most susceptible parts of the body are the extremities such as fingers, toes, ear lobes, or the tip of the nose. Symptoms include loss of feeling in the extremity and a white or pale appearance. Medical attentions is needed immediately for frostbite. The area should be SLOWLY re-warmed.

What is Hypothermia?
Hypothermia is abnormally low body temperature (below 95 degrees Fahrenheit). Warning signs include uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness, and apparent exhaustion. Medical attention is needed immediately. If it is not available, begin warming the body SLOWLY.

Tips on how to dress during cold weather.
- Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. Trapped air between the layers will insulate you. Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent, and hooded.
- Wear a hat, because 40% of your body heat can be lost from your head.
- Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.
- Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.
- Try to stay dry and out of the wind.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Advisory
(Abbrev. ADVY)- Highlights special weather conditions that are less serious than a warning. They are for events that may cause significant inconvenience, and if caution is not exercised, it could lead to situations that may threaten life and/or property.

Watch
A watch is used when the risk of a hazardous weather or hydrologic event has increased significantly, but its occurrence, location, and/or timing is still uncertain. It is intended to provide enough lead time so that those who need to set their plans in motion can do so.

Warning
A warning is issued when a hazardous weather or hydrologic event is occurring, is imminent, or has a very high probability of occurring. A warning is used for conditions posing a threat to life or property.

Storm
Any disturbed state of the atmosphere, especially affecting the Earth's surface, and strongly implying destructive and otherwise unpleasant weather. Storms range in scale from tornadoes and thunderstorms to tropical cyclones to synoptic-scale extratropical cyclones.

Blizzard
(abbrev. BLZD)- A blizzard means that the following conditions are expected to prevail for a period of 3 hours or longer:

Sustained wind or frequent gusts to 35 miles an hour or greater; and
Considerable falling and/or blowing snow (i.e., reducing visibility frequently to less than ¼ mile)

Hi

For this upcoming weekend....appears a good chance at seeing the first snow event of the season over much of the state... the main focus will be in the central and east parts of North Dakota. Exact track of low and precip types and amounts still a bit early.....but would appear areas from Bismarck to Bottineau eastward into Devils Lake-Jamestown could see several inches of wet snow Saturday afternoon into the night with a rain to snow event in the Red River valley.

Not a blizzard storm....but still the first snow event of the season. The far western areas of the state (Williston to Dickinson) is on the western edge and could see some snow but still questionable.

Temps not terribly cold with storm or behind it.....

Default Winter Storm Watch, Western North Dakota, 11-4-2011

Urgent - winter weather message
national weather service bismarck nd
1010 pm cdt fri nov 4 2011

...winter storm watch saturday afternoon through sunday...

.an early winter storm is gearing up to impact portions of
western and north central north dakota beginning saturday
afternoon and continuing into sunday.

Current indications are the track of the storm will bring the
best chance for significant snow to the west central...northwest
and north central portions of north dakota. Latest indications
are 2 to 4 inches of snow is possible over much of the watch
area...with localized higher amounts. Strong northwest winds
behind the surface low will likely cause areas blowing snow and
low visibilities... Especially saturday night into sunday
morning. The strong winds...combined with accumulating snow will
make roads slippery and travel may become difficult...especially
overnight saturday. Over south central and eastern north dakota
more of the precipitation will likely fall as rain...then change
to snow late saturday night or sunday. However...any change in
track or intensity could bring more snow to central north dakota.

Some places that may see the stronger impacts of this storm
include beach...dickinson...williston...minot...watford city...
Crosby and bottineau.

Those concerned with severe winter weather should continue to
monitor the latest forecast and statements on this early winter
storm system.

A winter storm watch remains in effect from saturday afternoon

North Dakota DOT has expanded their webcam network. Check out the link below which takes you to the normal highway condition map and click on weather cameras on the left to pop up icons showing where the locations are. Then click on the icon to bring up the picture.

Thanks Dan. I'm glad to see that they added a cam for Williston. That DOT camera looks like it's in the weigh station west of town on Route 2.

Here's a link that I frequently used to get to the DOT cameras. It doesn't have some of the other cameras that the 4 TV stations publish on the other map however. This DOT link needs to be updated with the new cameras.

Hi

Yes aware of the SCAN cameras....not really sure of the ownership of the two....DOT itself in both Minnesota and North Dakota are putting their own up and only avbl on the DOT page. SCAN pages have the weather station data.... I do like the main DOT cams better as they use .jpg versus the SCAN photos often have trouble loading sometimes, esp in Minnesota. We use all of them to aid in assessing current wx.

It is unlikely that the new ones will be on that SCAN website. More I remember SCAN is a non-DOT run website which displays DOT data, but not controlled by the state, versus the DOT webpages which the state has more control.
