I will graduate from truck driving school on the second week of December.

I will have a full CDL class A with Hazmat, tanker and probably air brakes and double triple endorsements.

Lets say I just want to get a job that will pay me the most and not looking to make a career in the oil field. Looking to save money for 2 straight years.

Are local companies the way to go? Thanks for reading.

I know of lease operators (owner ops) that are paying $30+ and even $40 in some cases per hour to start but they offer no housing (other than the sleeper), no benefits, no scheduled time off, not much of anything but a wage. If you are just out to make cash this is a good way to do it. Craiglist has the most ads for lease truck drivers. Some owner operators will 1099 you instead of take takes out of your checks. I'd beware of these guys because they also don't have workmans comp for you if they are 1099ing you.

IRS tax forms - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Basically when a trucking company leases on a truck they are considered independent contractors. The trucking company does not have to pay taxes on the contractor. Some owner ops are paying their "employees" as if they were independent contractors driving their trucks.

John Doe owns a truck. He hired Jim Bob to drive the truck. John Doe pays Jim Bob cash and does not take taxes out of Jim Bob's check. Jim Bob needs to pay taxes on his yearly earnings. John Doe would have to 1099 Jim Bob. People that are 1099 are generally not covered by workmans comp and are putting themselves at a huge risk. We do lot let our owner ops 1099 their employees unless that employee is a part owner of the truck.

This might be a better explanation.

Another they to put it:

Simplistically, They are NOT "hiring" you.. they are "purchasing" your services.... a business-to-business transaction.

Therefore you are responsible for your own benefits and pay your own taxes ....

kychlo - Would an LLC be in order for something like this??? - or- how do they do this in ND?

We have some MT guys that do this and yes, they have an LLC for their drivers and consider them partial owners of the trucks. Seems complicated to me but some are doing it.

LLC just would give legal/liability protection, to an extent... put everything (truck, insurance, etc..) under the LLC name and be an "employee" of the LLC

Just a thought...
