As an avid follower of this controversy....I dont think those understand the harm this could cause the university sports system.... I fear UND will not be able to join the Big Sky...without that hockey survives but the other sports die off. For most of us in the GF area...we all just want it this to end and come to a conclusion.
The NCAA will not listen to any vote....they are an organization. I strongly believe all we are harming are those in other non-hockey sports...such as football and basketball. If we have no conference....how can games be scheduled.....I dont think the others sports should be sacrificed for hockey. I personally have no ill feelings about the nickname.....but it is time to put feelings aside and think of the better good of the university as a whole.
That I fear is not what supporters care about. My two cents

The Big Sky Conference already released a statement saying they would take a wait and see attitude at this time. The NCAA can be compelled to act if the Standing Rock tribe is allowed to vote. I think it could be argued that the NCAA agreement isn't valid at this time as one party to the agreement is not acting in good faith. Let them vote and go from there.

i just dont think its worth the possibility of destroying UND athletics over a nickname. If those think a nickname is more important than the university...well go ahead and try your chances.
I don't understand why, according to the NCAA, it's OK for Florida State's teams to be called the "Seminoles" and for Notre Dame's team to be called the "Fighting Irish" but it's not OK for North Dakota's team to be called the "Fighting Sioux".

FSU got approval from the Seminole tribe (much smaller in numbers than the Sioux) and also shares a portion of the sale of Seminole merchandise with the tribe. Irish is not a Native American nickname and thus not labeled abusive.

How did the Fighting Illini slip by? Do they also have tribal approval? The biggest problem I have is that the NCAA is not acting impartially. There is a definite push by the NCAA to kill the nickname, otherwise they would allow more time or push for a Standing Rock vote.
I also think the paranoia about the end of UND athletics is laughable. This is no different than Democrats claiming that Republicans want to eliminate social security every time the budget comes up. The NCAA has said that at most the school will not be allowed to use the logo at playoff games. It will never get to the point that the university is banned from competition. This is political posturing and nothing more. One side or the other will back down before that point.
The tribe of Illini were completely wiped out by smallpox given to them by caucasians.
There is not now, and never has been, a federally recognized tribal entity of Illini to give or withhold permission for the use of the name.
The University of Illinois did however, after years of acrimonious debate, eliminate the mascot of Chief Illiniwek on university merchandise and ceased having an undergrad (and never in the history of the mascot was this role filled by a Native American of any tribe) "ceremonially dance" with the marching band in pseudo-Lakota regalia.
