I am in the running for a school principalship in Langdon. That's the good news. The not so good news is that I'd be relocating from Cincinnati,Ohio. During the first interview, one of the points the interviewer mentioned was " Langdon is 112 miles from the nearest KMart." I can't find much information about Langdon at all so any help would be greatly appreciated. Information on apts et al is what I am looking for. As to why I am even considering this move is that I have no job and the market here is bad.

Thanks in advance.

Langdon is a very small town located near the border of Canada, population of less than 2000 people.

The numbers on the miles are wrong though, the nearest Kmart is located in Devils lake which is 78 miles to the southwest, there is also a walmart there. Your next bet would be Grandforks which is further away, where you get your 112 miles from, either way you are a distance away from either.

As for apartments I have no idea, maybe contact the chamber of commerce or the city to get apartment information?

Hi,

[Mod cut]

Langdon is a bit over an hour from Devils Lake and they do have a small Walmart there- a super walmart is suppose to be in the works. There is also a K-Mart there along with a couple grocery stores, Macs Bolts, TSC.. etc.....

Grand Forks is about 2 hours away and they are the bigger area for shopping-- Super Walmart, K-mart- Super Target. mall. Menards, Lowes.... etc.. A lot of people doctor in Grand Forks for the specialists.

Langdon does have a small clinic and hospital, one grocery, several gas stations, a DQ and several local restaurants, two car dealers, ect... Langdon has a population of about 1800 people.

There are two schools, The Catholic School- that is looking for the Principal - it goes through grade 8 and is very small. The Public school has two buildings - one of which is grades K- to 6 and the other is grade 7-12. The school graduates 30-40 students a year with the classes getting smaller.

Langdon does get cold, and covered in snow. Right now it has lots. A lot of the state is snow free- but not there. If snowmobiling is something you like to do, it will be up your alley.

Good Luck.

Winnipeg isn't that far from Langon, so there are urban options across the border.

First of all, why would you even want to go to K-Mart?

Second of all, it's a nice enough little town. Yes, it gets a lot of snow, but it's not like you'd have very far to drive. And forget about renting! Have you looked at the home prices up there? You'll be SHOCKED at what $100K will buy you.

Hi

I live in the Grand Forks-East Grand Forks region. Our good friends are from Langdon....both sets of their parents are millionaires. One owns Dahl trucking in Langdon and the other farms. I have never been to Langdon proper...one of the few places I havent been too. We have gone camping at Icelandic State Park west of Cavalier. The area between Cavalier and Langdon is quite nice as you rise out of the Red River valley just west of Cavalier into some hills and trees....before you reach the flat plateau near Langdon. The Pembina river gorge is east of there as well and is quite scenic west of Walhalla and there is a ski area there Frost Fire with a summer theatre.

Langdon itself can be described as a typical small ND town. It is far enough away from larger cities so it would have grocery store, hardware store and other small stores....but most folks would do their main shopping in Grand Forks or maybe Devils Lake. Grand Forks would be about 1 1/2 to 2 hours away.

Being a smaller town, finding a place to live can be quite a challenge. I suggest contacting a local real estate company. Here is one with some listings for homes for sale...

http://www.watsonrealestate.net/custom10.shtml

Most homes would go for between 80-150k. Rentals would be very difficult as those small towns are just not large rental markets. I strongly suggest contacting a local person. Plus if you mention the local schools you will be head of they will you out. Langdon and that area has strong school and sport support.

Weather-wise... I am a meteorologist at NWS Grand Forks and no way around it....Langdon is a cold spot. It is typically one of the coldest most every day in the state and I think Langdon for average yearly temp is the coldest or one of the coldest in the lower 48. Winters are long with snowfall from mid Oct to mid April with snow on the ground all the time from early Nov to late March most every year. This year snow depths in the area are in the 25 to 35 inch range. It can be windy as well so blizzards are not too uncommon. But mixed with the cold can be very bright sunny days with clear crisp air and great star gazing. Summers are nice....usually some wind and often not too humid for days on end. Typical highs mid 70s to lower 80s mid Jun to mid August but can have some chiller days with 60s. Lows at night mostly 50s to mid 60s.

Hope this helps some....

Dan
