Yeah, well, I'm pretty sure they don't know it's against federal law to refuse to rent to someone because they have children. (You can refuse to rent a studio apartment to six people, but you can't say that you had a bad experience with children, period, so you aren't going to rent to anyone with kids in an otherwise normal size situation.) We've had great experiences in the past renting from individuals, but I'm thinking in this case (so many scams and odd things like this) that maybe going with an agency is the better choice. Everyone at both ends is vetted just a little more closely, you know?
Years ago he told a story about a family looking for a home. In the paper there was an ad for a 4 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car attached garage, "no children". Apply in person.
The next day the doorbell rang and when the guy opened the door, there in front of him stood an 11 year old boy, dressed in a suit. He said, "Sir, I am here to enquire about renting the house. I am reliable, quiet, don't throw parties, and I do not have any children. However, I do have my elderly parents still living with me."
