It can not be stressed enough, "Stay with your vehicle". If you leave your car, to clear the exhaust, or to relieve yourself, or gather snow, LEAVE YOUR CAR RUNNING. Troupers are trained that if they find a running car, there is somebody around. They will search for you. Say you slip and bump your head or something. If you left the car running, they will do an extensive search. If the car is not running, they have no clue if you got a ride with somebody, walked to a farm house, or whatever.

You may see a farm house a half mile away. Chances are you cannot get there before the weather changes and could disorient you to the point where you will get lost. I would only head for a house if I figured I could get there in just a few minutes. Before you attempt something like that, get your bearings, know where fences are, signs, etc... If you get disoriented, you might see one of those things and be able to remember where it was in relation to your destination. Also, unless you see activity, the house may be abandon and not offer anything other than a place to get out of the wind, and you already had that, in your vehicle.
