I will be traveling across North Dakota on I-94 in early August. Can I count on being able to find a hotel room for the night or has the boom made it risky? If it might be risky, does the problem extend all the way to Glendive, MT?
If you aren't certain of how fast you'll be traveling, then I would suggest stopping in Fargo or Bismarck and not counting on the small towns to have any rooms. I would also make your reservations well in advance.
I was up there three years ago and I'm a "rewards member" with several hotel chains but I still couldn't find a room. Fortunately, I was driving my RV and I just stayed in it overnight. However, if you are driving, and you are uncertain of how quickly you'll be traveling, you may wish to start your travels early enough so that you "clear" North Dakota in a day.
That way you can reach Glendive or even Billings before dark and there you'll always find room,in my experience.
There's plenty of places to stay. I myself have driven on I-94 and have had no problem finding hotels. Some major cities include Fargo, Jamestown, Bismarck/Mandan, and Dickinson.

Jamestown and Dickinson have less than 15k people each. They are hardly "major cities."
It's a 5 hour drive across the state,OP. I would advise either starting early and clearing the state in a day or making reservations well in advance. Since the oil boom and the news about ND's extremely low unemployment, you simply cannot count on there being rooms without checking first.
