Hi, I'm looking for some random information about Devils Lake for my son who will be attending school their this fall to play baseball.

My son currently resides in Kansas City, MO. and I'm curious on things like cell phone provider, best place he might be able to watch the Kansas City Chiefs on Sundays during the fall, and other activities he should become more acquainted with while in town.

First off, he has been up to Devils Lake and I haven't... yet. He and his mother found out Sprint cellphone service sucks in DL. We are looking to switch him to Verizon but was curious if any of the locals had better cell service options. I've had Verizon and had mixed reviews on their customer service and pricing. I just want to make sure I'm not missing other options before making the switch to Verizon for my son.

Secondly, even though my son totally understands he is firmly going to be in Viking country come football season, he still is interested in finding a place that might also show Chiefs games. Any sports bar with the Sunday Ticket package? My son told me one of the better bars in town is 21 and over. Any alternatives?

Any other pertinent information I should know upfront would be very much appreciative. Thanks ahead of time and looking forward to getting to know some of you on here.

Hi..

I live in Grand Forks and travel thru DVL on hwy 2 quite a bit. Verizon remains the preferred provider here,. Though do look at AT&T they have been getting better.

Sports on tv.... Applebee's may be a good place to ask..

Thanks for the response, Kamsack.

We will be looking into pricing and coverage for both Verizon and AT&T. Funny thing is my wife, who has Sprint, still had some service in DL, but my son had zero coverage. Rather nip this in the bud early.

Thanks for the response on Applebees. I knew DL had one, but I hadn't thought about trying there. I know the Proz Sports bar is 21+, but does the Proz bar Lakeside have the same game options? I found out there's another Proz and I'm assuming they have a similar setup minus the age restrictions.

Any locals have any other important information I need to know upfront. We will be taking my son up on the 10th of August to move in. I'm excited to check out the area and we intend on traveling up to Winnipeg for a day while the wife and I are up there.

Devils Lake area is well known for fishing .... as the lake is a lot bigger than it was 30 years ago. Ice fishing in the winter. It has enough stuff going on, a new small town SuperWalmart, a K-Mart I think still....Pizza Ranch, etc but it is quite a ways from larger cities such as Minot ( 1 1/2 hr west) and Grand Forks (1 1/2 hr east). Spirit Lake reservation is very nearby on the south side of the lake, so you will notice a higher population of Native Americans. There is a casino on the reservation so that may be an option for sport watching too.

Devils Lake is Devils Lake....not the most exciting place to be....but ok...and if your son is into water sports, or fishing (cold and warm season) than no better place to be. Water fowl also very big there....

That part of the state is often the coldest of the cold..... dont go by Bismarck temperature, closer to Grand Forks...though often DVL is a tad colder.

My son has never been one to complain about the cold (gets that from me), but I do understand it's a different beast from what we are accustomed too in winter, even in KC (where it can get pretty cold). I just told him to layer his clothing well and he should be okay.

He loves to fish. He has poles at home, but I told him when he gets up to DL, it might be a good idea to invest in a pole that's more suited for the fishing being done up there. He's pretty much set up for primarily for catfish and some bass right now. He does like Walleye fishing and I hear the Walleye are great at the lake.

Btw, I'm curious. My son is a Blackhawks fan and intends to try to get to a couple of their games. I told him driving up to Winnipeg would be his best option. He's been to Minneapolis with me to watch Chicago play a couple before (I'm a big Wild fan), but I told him Winnipeg is so much more convenient. Besides many people around the area being huge Sioux hockey fans, what is the professional hockey preference in the area? More Jet fans or Wild? I'm assuming Jets because of proximity once again. Just curious.

Devils Lake is a wonderful town. We lived there for 2 years and still miss our friends. It is very tight-knit but the community was very welcoming of our Hispanic family from Texas. Lake Region State College has some great faculty and staff members who have really made student athletes from all over the world feel welcome in this Midwestern farming community.
