Trying to see what updated info can find as to current residents in the area and
their take on the town and vicinity.
is this really one of the arm pits of the US?
Someone yesterday had that comment, the geographics do suggest its a semi arid dryish barren look-feel.
Closest real City looks to be Minot. That artificial man made lake actually looks somewhat fake, but who knows.
Except for the extreme cold, what real positives are there, like to see that perspective.
Anyone transplanted and settled in for awhile, whats your take?
Drove through Williston in 2012, wasn't all that bad, Minot was actually pleasant, Bismarck was much better,
loved Fargo for what it was, college town feel, red river valley up that way to Canada is something else.
Thank you everyone before hand, investigating this for someone close, they may end up relocating if enough feed back and other info coming across suggests positives outweigh the cons greatly.
Employment offer has been extended, from a long time ND business, not direct oil related, more agrarian oriented. Thanks again
It's been many many years since I have been to New Town. It is located on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. Back when I was there last, it was kind of a dump (definitely not the arm pit of the US though!), but I think it has been cleaned up somewhat. Lots of new residents due to the oil boom. Casino across the river. They have always had a little more crime it seems like than similar sized towns in ND and I suspect that is worse now with the oil boom.
Not sure what you mean by the lake looking fake??? Of course it's fake - it's man-made! It's a huge lake with lots of recreational possibilities. Good fishing and boating (when the howling ND wind isn't blowing!). Most of ND is semi arid dryish barren look-feel during the later part of the summer. Spring is very green. The area around New Town is more hilly and rugged. Still not a lot of trees though.
I do not see the extreme cold as a positive! However, other positives of ND in general are relatively safe, most people are friendly. For New Town specifically, the lake is great if you are into fishing and boating, good hunting in the area. Me personally, I would not want to live anywhere in ND (did my sentence), but if I did have to move back, New Town would not be on my top 40 destinations.
New Town has changed some ( haven't been there lately) but it partially depends on if you have family or not. The schools are not good, and the Reservation inhabitants have a lot of issues associated with the Rez (alcohol, drugs, some crime, low acheivement). If it was me, I'd commute from Killdeer (S), Stanley (N), Makoti or Plaza (E), or Williston (W). The Rez has some great people, more diverse than most reservations in ND, but some probably would not welcome strangers. Off the rez there is a different atmosphere, mostly better with more choices. If you lived in a city, you would probably not choose to live where there is the most social problems. Same here. Now if the job was for a social worker, it would be good to get to know the social fabric of the community.
Makoti and Plaza are just villages, but had great people. Closer to Minot too. Killdeer offers a lot more than it used to.

killdeer , didnt see that town exactly, though had heard of same + Parshall.
Dewey59 had mentioned tree's or lack of, actually had a long laugh there!
Is that missouri river from reading mostly a shallow mudhole minus the reservoir or are there actual pristine clean running looking places? Watford City, that looks populous for a western ND village. Stanley or somewhere has a real theatre.
That Theodore Park, is it literally a prairie of grasses with a few odd hills?
For scenic alternatives, turtle mtns maybe? 2-3 lakes looks like, one is man made again?, but for a state that has few alternatives, this is at least something. That peace arch is a hoke, but again grasping for a straw hey??
