A slightly tan "white" person (e.g. somebody with a little bit of Italian or Greek in their blood, or even a darker German) would count as a "person of color" in North Dakota!

True. ND is one of the few places in the USA where you might hear the phrase, "Yah, he's dark like them Germans".

Isn't there a NA Reservation in North Dakota somewhere? Also, would you say that the social climate is positive or negative towards African Americans? ND has come up in conversation as a place to settle after retirement.

My experience here, I enjoy it. I have not had any issues color related that I could identify. Are there people here who have an issue, sure, like anywhere, they will be there for whatever excuse they need to feel that way.

I think the biggest thing I have noticed is how many people would come up to my ND born german wife and I and comment on how cute our little girls are who are obviously not caucasian. And these are very old people who if anyone is going to have a pre-conceived notion about race, you would think it would be them since they lived during the times when it was really bad.

I think you may find that ND has a good amount of mixed families here, especially African American / White American mixes in the bigger cities.
