I just moved here in North Dakota, and currently living in an apartment. The driveway hasnt been plowed for 2 days now. I cant get out, I still have to work considering I work in a hospital. The road is a considerable distance from my apartment. Should I expect this wherever I rent? I called the maintenance people and they said they cant do anything about it? Is it a tenants right to have access to roads? Can I break my contract for this?

The blizzard conditions we're experiencing at the moment aren't typical. I know in some parts of ND, plows were shut down due to the extreme conditions the last few days. A lot of times in this state, roads and parking lots won't get plowed until later in the day if things are bad all over the city. When events like this happen, you just have to be prepared, and then hunker down and wait until it's over. Your boss should understand your absence considering the almost state-wide shutdown of roads this weekend. Enjoy your days off...

My husband got into town (30 miles away) early Thursday. We knew this was coming so we're just hunkered down on the farm enjoying our first winter here. If they get the county roads plowed Monday it'll be fine and my husband can use the tractor to plow us out.

As Dopefish said - enjoy your days off! You are NOT the only one snowed in Darn near the whole state is in the same boat.

Oh - and look out the window and see how beautiful it looks!

No, this would not justify breaking a lease agreement. This 2009 blizzard is early and most people are plugged in including the landlord. I'm sure the hospital takes this into consideration. the snow is suppose to subside tonight and tomorrow when the plows are out, I'm sure the apartment complex will be plowed out also. I just finished my driveway, yet the road has over 2 feet of snow.

Most apartments hire out who plows their driveways and sidewalks, those people are probably working around the clock right now trying to get things done. I don't think you can break your contract for it.

I'm sure the hospital will understand if you are snowbound. It happens in this part of country.

The above responders are correct. If your workplace really needs you, they may send some one to get you. Otherwise, enjoy the time off!!!!

Hi sorry for the delayed reply. I was busy making up for the days I missed during the snow storm. The hospital did send somebody to pick me up, my co-workers also were too kind to pick and drop me off on the other days.

When I got out of the apartment, I regret posting the thread. The whole city was covered with snow and everybody is working round the clock to clear it. Its quiet a sight for somebody who havent seen winters like in North Dakota. Friends, family and co-workers are helping each other every way they can. I felt selfish.

you say "selfish" like it's a dirty word. you pay for maintenance, you have a reason to expect it.
i have seen many apartment complexes where management uses the weather excuse for not doing their job. start looking for a different complex or management company. park avenue is good about snow removal, they typically have everything cleared within an hour or two
