My unemployment benefits (26 weeks UC) will expire the end of July. I've been on the look out for any extensions that will be offered but I don't see anything beyond June 2, 2010. I was laid off in January and as of yet have not been able to find work in my field. Does anyone have any information about extensions they will be granting? I'm really nervous that my time for receiving benefits will end soon and I can't find work. I am a single mom with a house and car payment all the other household bills we all struggle with, in addition I have my 20 yr old daughter living with me who is only able to work part time due to health conditions. Any advice on where to run if the benefits run out and I can't find work?

You will get more extensions, why do you think that you will not get anymore? Just keep signing for the unemployment.

Perhaps you will need to temporarily take a position that is not in your field...even if the pay is less. Less pay is better than no pay, right?

I would agree with you, however I have been looking for any type of job in healthcare and because there is so many people applying you cannot even get an interview!

As far as unemployment goes, you should get many more weeks. Just trying to help this person without telling her the obvious about looking for a job.

I only said what I did because she said she could not find something *in her field* - therefore, encouraging her to look *outside her field* temporarily....some people I know personally refused to take take certain jobs because they were seasonal, or paid less than their last job...but the fact remains, temporary pay or less pay is still better than no pay.

With the world being the way it is today , If you dont have a job and your waiting for ""something to open up"' your just wasting time , If a person has a desire to work there is work out there , Granted not all of it is great work , But work is work, Food is food , money is money , You gotta do what you gotta do ..

Look how many wholesome women turn to stripping to support themselves , They dont LIKE IT but they do it cause the have to ..

I feel that if someone looses their job why sit back and collect ?
get right back out there and start looking right away , The system will be outta money soon , what will you do then...

When there is a will there is a way ..

No free lunch

want a hand ? Its at the end of your sleeve ..
Thats the way I was raised

^ True to a certain extent. We don't know if this person has young children who will need daycare/babysitting.

I know when my children were too little to be left alone, it did not make sense for me to get a job because the only jobs I could get/qualify for would not pay enough to cover the cost of daycare, let alone pay any bills. It would have been spinning my wheels. We just adapted and learned to live on just my husband's income. Some do not have that option. Some did not have the benefit of a low interest mortgage, etc.

The first year I was in real estate, almost all of my income, after paying my fees/car expenses etc. went to my babysitter - who was CHEAP! She gave me a DEAL because she was my friend. I had only a little money left over - I stuck with that because the potential of making more money the next year was definitely there, plus the kids would no longer need babysitting in the future....

I was only able to do this because my husband still had income - and by that time we had paid off our mortgage.

It's not as simple as it sounds...too bad it weren't as easy as just looking for a job.

Alice, you might encourage your daughter to pursue ways of making some money from home - even if it's going to thrift shops and yard sales and finding things that would sell online for a good price. While I generally am not a fan of eBay I did once sell a new DVD for $47, and I had only paid $5 for it out of the discount bin of Ollies. LOL. Also, some people are able to make a little money by blogging and becoming popular and getting paid by advertising clicks...just some ideas to pursue! If she's good with photography maybe you could invest in a digital camera and she could set up a CafePress shop and sell products with her pictures on them. Certainly not any kind of earth shattering income here but every little bit could help. Worth pursuing anyway.

I made a good supplemental income by designing websites before I got into real estate,..and even a couple more times recently.... I taught myself HTML and graphic design using a product similar to Photoshop (an old version of Paint Shop Pro, the new version stinks for this purpose). There is still a demand for simple websites...before I became a Realtor I was doing several websites and had earned enough money to pay for high speed internet access, buy a new upright freezer, and also to fund a week's camping trip to Niagara Falls....stuff we couldn't afford on just the hubby's income.

Food for thought.

Oh I totally agree with you! I have applied to many jobs and it is very discouraging. I tried to get a job giving samples at Walmart. This is way out of my field but I cannot go without work. I just didnt want the situation that is pretty bad to get worse for her by insinuating (as someone did) that she doesnt want to work.
