carthyde I agree with all that you say!!!

I think that you are right about teens and rooms - I am not like my sister who expects her teen's bedrooms to resemble those of a model house - no posters no personal touches etc, Teens need to express themselves at least a little bit. But jars of peanut butter and half eaten bowels of cereal or frozen pizza in the bedroom is nasty - and a health hazard

I grew up in a house that was more museum than home. it was my mother's house and we were like boarders. I begged to have a pink bedroom at age 7 but my mother chose deep forest green with dark wood. it looked more like an English barristers study than a girls bedroom.
As a teenager everyone else I knew was permitted to put up at least a couple of rock posters or pictures of cute animals. my mom thought it was "tacky"

But I am glad that I had to help clean and be a part of the family. I did not go away to college not knowing how to do a wash!

Good for you for expecting your child who has autism to help out too! Ypu are doing that teen a true favor!
Yeah the human ARM shuts down here every once in a while - and it works!

kids need to have chores the more successful kids are given chores at an early age---around here i have one neighbor that gives her 9 yr old chores and he seems more mature than the 13 and 10 yr olds next door who play all day and litter outside--can you guess which kid has the more schooled and cosmopolitan parent?

My logic with my kids is that we all live in the house. It is not fair for one person to be doing all the tidying, cleaning, laundry for the other 3.
So when I ask my kids to do anything, they definately do not complain. They understand that I would never ask them to pick up after me, so why should I be expected to pick up after them ; after all they have arms and legs just like me.
I also remind them that I would like their wives to know they were raised with the knowledge of looking after themselves.
