Why are you a "Doherty Hump" if you're pro-University of Scranton? I'm just curious. I never once claimed allegiance to the mayor, and yet Rolo, Margaret, and others on the Times-Tribune have me pegged as aligned with him. Just because he and I share a few sentiments doesn't mean we're amigos. I also dislike Janet Evans, for what it's worth. I'm a free thinker. I'm not one of the "sheeple" who drool on themselves while being totally blind to how little Janet has done so far for the city while in council. I'm also not a crony who wants to kiss the mayor's feet. Why can't you be "pro-city" WITHOUT being "pro-Doherty?" They're mutually exclusive.

Like everything the University builds the new dorm/fitness center/eateries will be beautiful and an asset to the community!
Please try to talk about the subject without making any personal accusations.

They are talking points. Everyone who has differing opinions is a Doherty Hump, the University and Father Pilarz are land grabbers, Scranton is a dying city, etc etc etc.

People think if you say it over and over again it will become truth.

The "Doherty humps" all have their talking points too....anyone who opposes the corruption of the political establishment in this city (of which the U of S is a part) is a "doomer," "uneducated," "anti-progress," "anti-Scranton," blah blah blah.

Amnyways, you talk about Scranton as if you're from here, when you have no ties to Scranton other than going to school here. That doesn't make you a Scrantonian any more than my going to Phillies games makes me a Philadelphian.

The Cities Universities are its only saving grace. That 175K should dry up next year while they continue to build and expand. Maybe Janet Evens will re-think her strategy.

Perhaps we can discuss the continual accusations that I am Reston Runner.
Janet Evans is a person, last I checked. And you would think, with your high-falootin Jesuit education, that you would know better than to make claims of "extortion" against someone without solid proof.

Yeah, we're all just a bunch of coal-crackin' inbred hicks who would have no enlightenment or anything to live for if it wasn't for the benevolent Jesuits...

I didn't quite say it like that. We are in a global recession and cities all over the Country are feeling the squeeze. Scranton is particularly in trouble due to the fact that jobs are being lost and no industry is moving in.

With the Universities(Plural) not just the U of S, Scranton has an opportunity to embrace higher education as its industry. It will promote job growth, innovation and bring much needed young folks into the area. Not even mentioning the core jobs needed by local residents to maintain and provide services. (construction, engineering, architecture, waste management... ect)

I am sorry if you don't agree with that but there is not much else to consider.

Lastly, a part of your diatribe is true. The University of Scranton has provide enlightenment to thousands of local Catholics who otherwise would have never been able to go to school. Since 1888 the school has educated people from every social strata imaginable and provided a future to many people.

Yes, but that's not so true anymore. You have to be pretty well-off to afford the U of S these days. They're not exactly reaching out to lower-income people of the area anymore to offer them an opportunity for higher education. The only problem I have with the U of S is their land-grabbing tendencies....they seem to like to push their political weight around to get what they want. You don't really see this from Marywood.

Honestly, the local Penn State campus is probably the most important higher education insitution in the area. You can earn a degree there (or start a degree there, depending on your major) that is worth every bit as much, if not more, than a U of S degree, for a fraction of the price. And if it wasn't for PSU, you wouldn't be able get a bachelor's degree in this area without paying through the nose.

Marywood is not in substantial growth Mode. When Sr. Mary Reap was President they were growing and expanding.

Lackawanna College is growing and will be buying more land. Commonwealth will do the same. If they are met with all is crap from insignificant officials, they will contribute nothing.

At least Doherty has the sense to say thank you.
