Ithaca, NY is only a bit further from Towanda than Elmira is (NY 34 is a fairly quick road other than slowing down briefly for the "twin cities" of Van Etten and Spencer ), and closer than Binghamton or Scranton is.

It is home to the largest Ivy League university in case that might count as a good school to attend.

I think most folks would consider it a bit far for a daily commute but the feel of Ithaca is much different than the other small cities in the area.

Mentioning any connection with the developing shale gas industry would probably be a conversation stopper around Ithaca these days, though.

Thanks for the question and info, my wife and I are living in Houston and will be moving to Scranton in October. Will miss the big city but not the humidity and Mosquitos.

Hello Queenwasp21,

My family of 6 is coming to the Elmira/Sayre/Athens area in the near future. My husband is starting a new position in the FAA at the Elmira Airport next week. He has found a small rental in Elmira for just himself during the week. He will be commuting back to our current home in the Allentown, PA area for the weekends until we sell our house. I was wondering how things went for your family? Colleen Michelle

NYS schools in that part of the state are not the best. I think that you should look into Clark's Summit.
An excellent school district. (Abington)
There are homes in that area that can be had for 150,000 or in that area.
It's not at all depressing and there are may younger families.
Check it out on Trulia or Zillow.

Sorry I made a mistake. The correct name of the school district is Abington Heights.
As far as your own education, Keystone College is in La Plume which is very close to Clark's Summit.
University of Scranton and Marywood University are in Scranton which is not to far.
I also think that there may be a Campus of Penn State near by, but I am fairly new to the area myself, so perhaps someone else could give you the exact name.
Good Luck!

Sheena...The Abingtons area is a good option...I also believe Tunkhannock is not a bad route either...though for someone from a major metro area they may not find enough there to do.....but The abingtions are only 20 minutes down the road.
