In the post you're citing, we were talking about Columbia County, not Schuylkill County.

But you're right, Eagle's Mere is fully inside Sullivan County. I always get the county borders mixed up with Rickett's Glen SP and World's End SP/Eagle's Mere. It is in Rickett's Glen SP where Columbia, Sullivan (and Luzerne) counties have odd intersections.

I love the Locust Lake area. We've camped there several times as well as other State parks in the area. We are currently looking to move to the Schuykill County area near a tiny town of Pine Grove. The prices are great as well as the taxes. We live in Hamburg, PA which is in Berks county which might be a good place for you as well. I personally do not like Hamburg but that is my own preference. The beauty of the area, the small town atmostphere, festivals, farms might be something for you to look into.
We are moving because we are being taxed out of Berks county but I do not know your financial situation.
I am sorry for your loss of a little one and I pray you find that little bit of sanctuary you seek.

Your ideal town fits Wellsboro to a T, but it's over 200 miles to Philly and some of the surrounding hills reach 2400 feet.

To the OP -- I know you expressed interest in Schuylkill County specifically, but what about Jim Thorpe itself? It's a very vibrant town with a small town feel, the time of hometown living you seem to be looking for (parades, library, active community) and shops galore! It's a bit touristy though, especially on weekends, but the north/new end of town is a lot less busy and more residential (oddly enough, this is the section where Jim Thorpe is buried).

Schuylkill County in the are you mentioned is near Tamaqua. It is a very depressed area and while it has a Library there are few stores . The town is so dilapidated and taxes have gone berserk in the area.
Jim Thorpe, it has probably everything you want but the downtown is very small town. Most stores are owned by people from the city. I go often enough to shop and eat at some of the restaurants. I avoid weekends as parking is a pain. I actually have seen many famous people walking around Jim Thorpe. Last year my husband and I came out of Crave(then Albright Mansion-they changed the name) and Actor Christopher Walker was walking down the street toward us!

While I am a Schuylkill County transplant I must say I have seen much change in Carbon County and the Poconos.
Maybe I have become an Old Fart(52 now) and want the quaint slow pace as I remember. But things have changed here. Traffic has become so overwhelming by our home ,stunt planes now pollute the sky above Mauch Chunk Lake and ruin the peace we all want when we hike or bike even boat. Crime has increased and Robberies have become a daily occurrence in the past it was unheard of. Meth Labs in every town. Jobs long gone .

Well that could be any town and is every city.

I guess what we all want is our peace of heaven but maybe there really is no such place on this earth.

Good luck.

Hubby finally retired but will not be able to sell our home right now. Homes around me have been on the market 4 years with no movement even with reductions of $100,000. Our home assessed at $152,000. Pa taxes 50% of the value and we are taxed on $76,000 and yes we pay $6,000 in taxes a year in the Coal region!
Yes, we feel we pay to much but with an area with over 50% poor and much welfare one can understand why.
