Besides Abe's further down S. Main, what other institutions are left down that way?
Well, you can still eat at Handley's Diner, which was at the corner of South Main & Dana, but it's now called the South Beach Diner in Miami Beach. South Beach Diner | Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/silvaazniv/435048974/ - broken link)

Is it in that shopping area with the liquor store & other stuff? We just passed by there today but I didn't really pay attention. If it looks like a diner it should have been obvious.
At the corner of S. Main & Academy is Crown Chicken, we stopped there a couple months ago (I wanted chicken), but when my wife went inside she saw they had Gyros as well. It seems like it's run by Greek gentlemen. She said her Gyro was very good, but not the best she's ever had (but above the norm).
Last month when we were downtown for the Farmers Market, she stopped at the place at the NE corner of Public Square and got a gyro, but she said that one did not nearly compare to the one from Crown.
Anyway, we don't eat out that often, and too bad we missed our chance with Hottles.

Yep. Hottle's is gone, yet I bet Olive Garden will have an hour-long wait on Friday night.

It's the nature of the beast. This is what happens when small businesses are taxed and taxed and taxed and the corporate behemoths receive government welfare.

As for local places still down town --- Thai Thai, Luna, Januzzi's, S&W Restaurant, Senuna's, Cafe Toscana, Oyster @ Genetti's and Katana.

or, it could also be

location,location,location...

some folks may prefer easy parking, while not having to worry about the hassle of driving to center city WB and park their vehicles on city streets like S Main in WB where vehicle breakins are a commonplace occurrence.

p.s. - Olive Garden restaurants are individually owned and operated franchises. The behemoth Mama Bear may get franchise fees, but no govt welfare....

Parking is no longer a problem for most of downtown Wilkes-Barre. If people are too lazy to walk a few blocks, well there ya go...

Rest assured ALL huge corp's get gov't welfare - federal, state or local - it happens.

Too bad the residents of WB did not support their landmark eateries.
No parking required.

Once again Olive Garden is individually owned & operated. (Fact).

If you want to talk about the evil BIG CORPs and govt welfare, you should try the POLITICS Section on this website.

Have a nice eaveneeng......

Doesn't change the fact that Olive Garden blows. Its the same frozen reheated garbage at Olive Garden in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Oklahoma, or California. People who eat at Olive Garden in this area, with great home cooked Italian food all over the place, are obviously lemmings with no taste buds.
