Ok does anyone have any good bear stories for me? What are the chances of seeing one in the Lake Ariel/Hamlin area? I'm just curious as to the population of black bear up there.

cool. i have no desire to get close to one but i guess it'd be neat to see one. i saw one years ago in sullivan county, there was a dump where bears came to eat but other than that i've only seen them in zoos.

I've heard of folks putting garbage in a "corral", or an enclosed area fenced by 2x4's, but the bears tore it up. Wonder if some electric fence wires would discourage animals that large...

We had a huge bear in our back yard when I lived in Penn Estates......Big guy.
There was a smaller one by our daughters car just as she was about to head for work. She had to call and say she'd be late, due to a bear!
Also another time we rode in a car watching a very big bear roam the woods. Many were in cars because of the size and interest in this bear. That time a walker almost jumped into our car when the bear turned.
Our distant neighbor in the development use to see Momma bears with cubs.
I have to say the very last bear I saw was in New Jersey crossing the road in front of us. We barely missed hitting him. He was on Waterloo Rd. just before Continental Drive......heading towards the hiking area. That was in July.........
I had lived in NJ for years and years.......and finally this was the one bear I saw in that state.
Sometimes they have been seen by the restaurants that are high on the mountains, in their dumpsters......looking for food.
All seem to be heading on their own merry way.........thank goodness.

We have bear here in Jefferson Heights. One particularly active one was around in early summer, knocking down bird feeders and toppling garbage cans. A few neighbors saw it running down the road - what a sight!
None have I seen so far and, really, that's okay with me!
