In recent days I've seen workers with trucks all over town (Wilkes-Barre) stringing up wires. Especially today (Friday 3/25) it seems they are really out in force, as I saw them in about 10 locations just on my way between home and Walmart. Just now they came down our street as well. I spoke to one of the workers and he said they are wiring for RCN, which will be a new cable company competing with Service Electric.
There actually was an article about this in the Times-Leader, but that was in January:
W-B to see competitor for cable TV | The Times Leader, Wilkes-Barre & Scranton PA (http://www.timesleader.com/news/W-B-to-see-competitor-for-cable-TV.html?searchterm=rcn - broken link)

Looks like they will be using fiber-optic technology and offering the option of much higher speeds for internet (and TV / phone as well). They are already in the Lehigh Valley:
RCN Lehigh Valley | High Speed Internet | Plans & Pricing

(and Boston, Chicago, D.C., NYC, and Philly)

Also they are expanding operations at their headquarters in Plains and plan to hire more people:
RCN | About RCN | Careers

It might take some time to get all the work done (they couldn't say how long), but cheaper & faster may be a good thing, as well as competition.

This is good news. I would switch back to satellite, but I enjoy getting Philly channels.
I also think that the take over of Service Electric in WB, by Service Electric from the Lehigh Valley will be good news for the customers.

I wouldn't hold my breath about fiber optics from RCN. If anyone does it, it will be Verizon so they can start pushing Fios. Which seems awesome.

Good news. It's nice to see some competition. Faster internet is pretty exciting too.

I just wish that there was a cable company or satellite provider that let us just receive and pay for the stations/programs that we want to see. I just have a basic plus package from BRC. Of the eighty or so stations I don’t think that I ever watch more than a dozen. So; why can’t we have companies that have a pay-as-you-go policy? As far as I’m concerned; they can keep most of the garbage they throw at me.

I am less than enamored with Service Electric. We have frequent interruptions of service and I have triple play so the internet, phone and television are all effected at once.
We have ordered pay per view movies and they were pixilated or other wise unwatchable.
They also keep odd hours - in other words they work 9 to 5 and no weekends.
So there is no one available to trouble shoot on weekends or evenings.
Is this a geographical difference to expect that at all hours someone will be available to take care of my need to watch an indie movie at 3 AM?

On the other hand unlike Cablevision, back in NY, they are quite nice and always believe us when we complain and they credit my account quickly. On LI everything was a big argument, but they were available 24/7 . Nasty and surely but they were available.

Supposedly with the takeover of SE in WB, we will get the channel lineup from LV, which has more HD channels, including our favorite ABC Family HD. That will be nice during the 25 days of Christmas.

Whoever said it was a good thing that LHV SECTV took over the Wilkes-Barre Area should look up everything they took away, I'm glad you gained a few HD channels but they cut the upload speeds on internet packages, now they are all 800KBPS even the 30MBPS Wideband package is only 800kbps now and it used to be 2MBPS! Also the people who lived here before me ran up a bill and never paid it, SECTV made me jump through hoops to get service on i had to bring a lease down, utility bills, all because they THOUGHT! KEY WORD THERE THOUGHT! That other guy MAY live there. Are you serious, go after the dude who didnt pay you, don't put your NEW customer threw a bunch of crap!? Lets talk about some business hours, BANKS ARE OPEN LONGER THEN THESE PEOPLE! Urgh Don't get me started. Anyways Welcome RCN, Can't wait for the 60MBPS/6MBPS internet ill be signing up for!
