Contacting a local running club is a good thing to do.

Also, with an open post like yours, it helps to provide at least general info on area you live in/near. More would be basic ability/experience, preferred pace/distance, and even time of day or days you would like to run. Personal info can be exchanged if you 'get a lead'' on a group or individual.

Regardless, consider investigating a charity based training group Leukemia Society's like Team in Training Team In Training - Together We Train to Beat Cancer. There are others as well , but I don't know how many are 'local' to you, since you haven't said what 'local' is. These charity groups involve fund raising but in return they help train for and enter distance events like running, biking, and triathlons. They are very well run and provide a unique experience that can be good in multiple ways.

Also just stop by and chat at a local running store or two. There are at least two near Scranton (besides shoe stores in shopping mall). They usually are runners and of course know a lot of them as well as informal groups. Don't do it at a busy time as they are often crazy busy and then very quiet. They are also good places to buy gear and shoes so if you tie the chat into a purchase all the better.
