mathjak, I guess you are right on the taxes. NYC does have a very favorable tax rate, especially in Queens, I had relatives there until recently in Woodhaven. People don't realize it's more affordable there than anywhere outside the city. Also, I read that in the city, contrary to popular belief, the cost of living for food is also very competitive.

59 cent bread at Wegmans. And when I buy soda, I'll buy the Wegmans brand which is just as good for 69 cents for a 2 liter....Wal-Mart brand is 66 cents.

At a Safeway near DC, I paid 3 bucks for a store-brand box of Rice Krispies....that usually costs a buck-and-a-half here. That wasn't the only item more expensive, but that sticks out in my mind.

ty, I do not drink soda, neither do my boys, but my husband does. I am a green tea gal! I kicked my soda habit about 3 years ago.

bloomsinscranton: I'm curious, where are you originally from/how long ago did you move to PA...
becasue I cant think of anywhere near me that I'm buying .79 soda or bread.
coal: I never considered coal, thanks for the tip, I will keep it in mind
Jay: too funny that your from Elmont, small world. Though I doubt you would know me, we've been here 12 years and barely know anyone around here :/ But I do live right off of Meacham lol...did you hear that Meacham Deli changed owners? heartbreaking
Looks like we may be moving sooner than later...as in over the summer. I'm scared and excited for the next chapter of life.
Anyone have any thoughts on the Wallenpaupak school district?

Yes I heard about the deli. I knew the old owner (Anthony) well. We went to school together. Their heroes were incredible. When I had parties in PA I would have my family bring in heroes from them.

I lived on cameron st for a while and owned a house on oakley ave. We lived there right up until we moved 5.5 years ago. I did landscaping in elmont for almost 15 years so I know every street in the town and over the years cut almost every lawn.
