I took my daughter to a doctor's appointment last week. On the way home I saw a bladeless helicopter on a flat bed truck going west on US 58 in Suffolk Virginia. I saw the call numbers on the side N16EP and I remembered that was WNEPs copter...Holy cow!

Did some research and found that they laid off the pilot. Are they selling the copter for scrap????

Atricle:Skycam 16 grounded, pilot laid off - Wilkes-Barre, news, sports, obituaries, and classifieds for Luzerne County and Scranton | The Times Leader, Wilkes-Barre, Scranton PA - www.timesleader.com

What a shame.

They don't have the money. There is lot of competition from the web for advertising dollars which has hit newspapers and the TV stations hard, especially the local ones. I can deliver ads to people from NEPA targeting specifically those with interest in coal related products at a fraction of the cost for TV or newspaper advertising. Those ads can also bring the customer directly to the advertisers digital front door. Who are you going to advertise with?

Since I've been involved in aviation for several years I can tell you that the aviation industry has been hit hard due to the economy and rising gas prices...here are the gas prices at Wilkes-Barre Intl Airport for Jet-A (which those choppers use): $5.83/gal and for 100LL (LL = low lead): $6.39/gal...so as you can see it can get quite expensive just in fuel alone never mind pilot salaries, health insurance, helicopter insurance, annual mandatory inspections, etc., etc.,

Wow, I used to rent a Piper Archer (N29296) from MillionAir at AVP. At that price for 100LL, it costs $64 an hour just for fuel. What's the rental rate now, about $120/hr?
