Thanks for the suggestions. I guess at most we would want to spend half a day hiking, 5-6 hours. I had seen the DCNR's website but wasn't sure what we should pinpoint. We once stopped during a long drive and took a break by doing some hiking at site where it was listed that there was this beautiful waterfall. What we found at the end was something, water was indeed falling, but it was less than a foot high. While the hike itself was nice, I want to avoid expectations that are unrealistic.

Worlds End park also sounded interesting, thoughts?

Might have to check out Hickory Run again. We were there but only to see the boulder field (which was awesome) and then continued on our journey.

For the Falls Trail - have people worn sneakers? I actually feel most comfortable in either sneakers or my 'off-road' sandals if it is wet.

World's End is nice and the Loyalsock Creek there is an interesting site. I wore sneakers on the Falls Trail, but I'd recommend your off-road sandals or a sturdy pair of hiking boots if you go. The trail is full of slippery rocks and "steps". A woman actually slipped and fell while we were there last time. She was injured and had to be carried out on a gurney.

I'd go with hiking boots unless there's been a drought and the trail is totally dry.

Although boots or similar are the safest, each time I have hiked the falls, I have worn sandals. I have yet to have a problem.

A nice hike is Bushkill Falls, although you have to pay to get in. I would also recommend hiking the Appalachian trail through Delaware Water Gap.

According to the State Forest website, free camping is permitted in State Forests without a permit for one night per location:

http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/ucmprd2/...cnr_001910.pdf

One of the nearest ones to Wilkes-Barre is Crystal Lake, just off the road going from Laurel run up to 115. Here's a map:

http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/ucmprd2/...t/D_000876.pdf

The dashed lines say "administrative road" on the legend, so maybe it's not legal to drive into it, but backpack instead. Anyone have any experience with that location?

The state forests are different than the parks. State forests are too primitive for me.

Anyone been to Ricketts Glenn this year? How is it? Just missing it and wondered how it was.
