That's why I was looking for a large piece of property. Would you care if I was 2-3 acres away? You wouldn't even know if I had dogs.

I might be sensitive on the issue, but that's because it's their lives not just something trivial. I've witnessed the results of breed specific legislation.

Anyway....

Not to get too far off topic, but a woman in Jacksonville was killed earlier this month by her two pet Pits. She'd raised them from pups, and there was no sign of having raised them as fighting dogs. Apparently, they decided she wasn't worthy of running with the pack...no matter that she fed them, bathed them and raised them as her children.
I'm all for no-kill shelters, and I have no specific personal history with the breed we're talking about. I think this is a good time to play the odds, though. There are more nationally reported incidences of Pit Bull attacks than any other breed. They are also consistently listed in the top three most dangerous breeds. The dog has been mutated genetically (and in a very thin gene pool) for monetary gain through gaming and fighting. I wouldn't want to live anywhere near a Pit Bull. If I did, and I knew it...I'd prepare myself.
I'm just saying.
Having said all that, I am the proud best bud of a German Shepherd. She's almost five months old, and her breed is part of a long history of intelligence, loyalty...and attacks. GSD's are also consistently listed in the top ten most dangerous breeds, yet my children are running and playing with ours daily.
I'm throwing stones in a glass house.

I won't bother finding the readily available list of GSD attacks on people I happen to like GSD's - as with any other dog, it's how they're raised. I don't blame a dog for how it's people raise it anymore than I blame a child.

You are throwing stones indeed, at least you realize it. I hope you also realize that a BSL ordinance will almost certainly include the GSD and the breed is in fact already banned in several parts of the country. But then, the pug is also banned somewhere....go figure.

I'm curious. What federal government agency is in Northumberland, PA? I can't think of anything offhand, other than the post office.

I think the original post was a fraud. If you check out different forums on city-data, you will find very similar threads started by posters with only 1 post, who ask how a community is toward black people, and then they never respond again.

Conors,
You have a point, and then I thought the thread was about dogs.....so I did not bother to respond.

And there are reasons that drug-dealing thugs own pit bulls and not labradors, goldens, Boston terriers, etc. Because they have a tendency to be vicious, thats why. I don't recall hearing too many stories around here about kids getting mauled by a labrador or a collie, but the stories about pit bulls attacking kids, adults, other animals, etc are too numerous to count.
Its really true, and sometimes we have to look, listen, read, and understand, even if we don't want too. Conorsdad, I have seen, and I agree....

That was a sad story indeed.........I too love dogs and try to donate to all Save a Pet centers.
I'm sure that woman who was killed, thought her pit bulls harmless, loving pets ..........I'm afraid that something seems to snap in them.
I would be deathly afraid to have one next door. We have a Lasa and a Cocker next door, so I don't worry.
However, yes..........once a german shepard did come at me, almost bit into my face.... ( My best friend told me he was safe!)
