Does anyone know what the birthday cutoff is to get into kindergarten? Do they let you slide if you're a few days off? Is there any way to fudge a bday

A few years back it was 5 by the first day of school, it might be Sept. 1st now.

And NO, they absolutely will not let you slide.

As a parent with 2 girls born in early Sept., one making the cutoff and one not making it, I can't stress enough the upside to being the oldest in the class vs. the youngest. The youngest in the class...no matter what kind of scholar you think they are at age 5, will sooner or later feel the pinch of being the youngest. They will be the last kid in their class to get their drivers license, that is a big deal to them. They will also be the last one in their crowd to turn 21, which means they will be doing some things sooner than you'd like. That boy (if you have a daughter) that they like in 11th grade when they are in 9th grade could very well be 3 1/2 yrs. older than they are.

Western Wayne has a terrific Pre-K program in their district, so if you are in a rush for them to go to school, this is a great alternative.

Here in NY the cut off is dec 1st. I ahve a son whos birthday is dec 7th. I cannot tell you how wonderful it was to have him home for an extra year. He was getting services and got them for an extra year.

My son is a May birthday. There is a huge difference in how he fared that first year as compared to my other son who was the oldest in the class.

It's funny how each school district has a different cut off date. Where I am it's 5 on or before August 31 and my daughter's birthday is Sept 1 so she missed K by one day this year!

Trust me, you will be so glad she missed the cutoff. I have a daughter on Sept 6 and 11th. The loder one on the 11th was in NY for 1st grade so she made the cutoff there. The younger one missed by a few days. It is so much better to be the oldest than the youngest!! Especially in the teenage years!!
