Paul, I applaud you for having your letter published.
The letter itself is very well written, crystal clear and straight to the point!
Bravo!

Oh dear. I have a feeling that this thread will become one of these though once Dan and the others wake up, see it, and spit their coffee out everywhere:

I thought the letter to the editor was great.
Good planning, for the future should always be foremost on a communities mind.
Placement, and Progress, go hand in hand.

Now here's coffee for everyone. Have the gang gotten up yet?
Because I'll bring donuts if they don't spit............

I was talking to an out-of-town couple in Brixx on saturday, and they were asking for directions to the nearest convenient store. The bar tender rattled off a few locations, and I pointed out that most were closed on a saturday. The couple was fairly perplexed, and I had to explain that there is basically no foot traffic on the weekends. Their opinion was that the downtown seemed very nice, and it appeared like a lot of things were happening (the 500 of lackawanna, the courthouse construction), but it seemed odd that downtown living was either non-existant or unused.

There's a surprisingly high demand for downtown housing options that isn't being met. As much as Dan thinks it is "stupid" for people to want to live downtown, I must disagree. I think that the notion of living within walking distance to the cultural center, cinema, mall, coffee houses, offices, restaurants, bars, nightlife, churches, colleges, etc. is attractive to very many people, including myself.

it would be nice if more people moved to the downtown for residential purposes, because it would revive the downtown. But my opinion is that most people don't move to downtown because Scranton has so many neighborhoods within walking distance to downtown where you can still own a freestanding house with a yard. You can live in the Hill, Hyde Park, Nativity, etc, and have a yard and live in a neighborhood and still walk to downtown. Places where there are a high number of people living downtown typically do not have neighborhoods like Scranton's so close to the downtown. Another reason I like Scranton....you can have city conveniences and still live in a small-town atmosphere.
