Seem to have finally bought a house in Big Bass Lake, after several fits and starts.... Just waiting for the results of inspection.

I understand the cable company and phone company (DSL) both offer high speed internet access there. I'm an IT guy, so need to get fast reliable service. Any feedback on the reliability of those two options there?

Thanks in advance...

Hi Oldnerd,

I was somewhat surprised that you are an IT person and did not investigate this before you purchased the home. My husband is retired but when we first moved here, it was paramount that he checked the internet and phone service since he was on call 24/7. Our lot was one of the few lots that had great reception so having the satellite and good strong cell signal was important for his job. Good luck, I am sure someone from your area will give you the information that you need. On the other hand, sometimes we all get overwhelmed by moving - there are things we forget. Speaking of cable, here where I am it took five years to get.

Lots of luck with your new house!

The Hat

Yes Hat that was one of the first questions we asked in Oak Ridge considering my hubby is a satellite eng!
Nerd- I did a website for a woman who owns a business in Big Bass and know that both services are available to you over there but I think the dsl is a way better choice. She has dsl and it works great. We used the cable company here for a few years only because the dsl wasnt available yet and now that it is and we switched we couldnt be happier. No problems at all and no down time in the 6months we've had it. The cable, because they are more mom/pop around here we were down here and there, sometimes a day at a time!

I just subscribed to the Blue Ridge cable co. for TV/Internet at Big Bass Lake. I am not getting an installed phone, since it's a vacation home and my Verizon cell phone works fine at the house. I took a package that gave me pretty good internet speeds. I would compare it to the broadband service that I get here on LI. I will do a speed test next time I go up to the house. The install was fine and no problems at all. I can't vouch for reliability since I've only had it for a week.

The good news is you have choices, so call each company and see what they can offer you.

I have Blue Ridge Cable for TV & Internet also but I am in Shohola. So far, since Easter (when we moved here), we had one outage that was maybe 6-8 hours and it was overnight so, for me, it wasn't too big of a deal. Other than that, they've been great, can't complain and I'm getting a lot more in cable/internet svcs for my money here than I was in NJ. :-)

Adding to what everyone here has contributed to: the benefit that I like with satellite is that it is very rare that you have a problem. I think I remember once not getting a connection due to dense fog. I, for one, cannot stand dial up for a slow connection. If I were going to do it all over again I may have chosen cable: the main reason is that you get local channels with satellite you do not. However, after purchasing a small satellite dish - I can not fanthom changing at this point. I would do with others suggest and compare prices.

Good luck.

The Hat

" was somewhat surprised that you are an IT person and did not investigate this before you purchased the home."

I checked on internet access, and was told that the phone company's DSL and the Cable company cable modem were both available -the question was just which option provided better service in the area. Not that worried about TV - just where I'd get the best internet service for the money.

We're using it as a vacation home - so while I need to have the service, I'm hoping to not spend THAT much of my time focusing on it.

At my full time home, both DSL and Cable are available - but the DSL is dramatically more reliable there. At colleague's home, the inverse is true - so just checking for comparatives.

Thanks for the info all.

Default Cable at Big Bass

I assume you have made your decison by now, but cable and internet is excellent here through Blue Ridge.

I live in the community and do much of my work through tele-communting. Makes life easy.

Not yet - haven't quite closed on the house, so I appreciate the input. JUst waiting for the Bank to finish processing paperwork.

I've been leaning toward the cable company, and not bothering with local phone at this point, and just using the cell phones when we're up at Big Bass.
