My husband and I, along with our newborn are looking into moving to PA. He is from Phila. but he's never ventured outside the city, so he's not much help to finding a town. He wants to be close enough to Exton because he is planning on attending UTI, and I have parents that live in Sussex County, NJ (on the end closer to Morris County). Being close enough to my parents is ideal since I need my mom's help to watch the baby while I attend school. The max I would be willing to drive is 45 mins tops, since it would be a daily commute. I want an area where we can get land and a home that doesn't exceed $140,000, and where I can keep chickens and a few goats. As you can probably tell, we would like a quiet, country area. I really am not familiar with many towns in PA so I have absolutely no idea where to start looking.

Those areas are too far apart to be practical. One of you will have a very long commute to school or your parents. I would suggest reevaluating and coming up with a better plan.

I know, a lot of the towns in this area are either too far from his school or too far from Sussex Co. Are there any towns that you know of that are a mid point? Like I said I have no idea..

The Bethlehem/Allentown PA area - but the drive would still be too far. Could your husband consider education closer to your parents? That would eliminate the problem. Otherwise you are not going to see too much of each other.

Sorry to have to say this is not an easy commute either way. First off, the clock math I'm doing just in my head is telling me the best you will do is about 90 minutes either way to be right in the middle. Then you are contending with major traffic areas in either direction. About the best you will do is Easton, PA and then add some time for traffic so yep, you are looking at 90 minutes minimum on a good drive. I don't think you will ever find a good drive in this corridor either so figure 2 hours in either direction.

Maybe your husband can enroll at Monroe Career and Technical Institute in Bartonsville, PA? Then you will be close enough to your parents and still in PA.

Having lived in both NEPA and the Lehigh Valley, and having commuted to both NNJ and SEPA, I agree that your plan isn't feasible. 80, 78, and the PA Turnpike are all high traffic roads, and if they were not the distances you are talking about in any scenario won't work. Sorry but you need a different plan.

I have friends in the Lehigh/ Northampton area and I remember the bad traffic from traveling to and from jersey. I keep telling my husband that it's either a long drive to school for him or a long drive to my parents for me. I'm not sure but I mapquested the Allentown area to exton and then to my parents address and they are an hour and some change both ways but not taking traffic into consideration. I've never heard of Monroe Tech, but I looked it up and it says it's a high school... I'm guessing it has adult programs? I graduated from a tech high school in jersey and they offered adult programs, but I'm not sure how it works in PA.
