Great! The more the merrier! I've found most NY/NJ transplants to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area to be more socially open-minded than the homegrown natives, many of whom still clutch their purses more closely when African-Americans walk by, believe all brown-skinned folks are "dem der illegals", or assume all gays spreads AIDS through handshakes and molest children (cough...Huckabee...cough!) For as much as I love this region, I've noticed on my travels that many of the NEPA homegrown natives are much more intolerant of minorities than residents of adjacent states, which only holds us back, in my opinion. If we attract more folks like I LOVE PA, coartist88, memoriesbre, new2pa, Summering, etc., then I'd be thrilled. I just wish one or two would move to the existing core of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre instead of exclusively to the outlying areas (Tunkhannock, Lake Ariel, Clarks Summit, etc.). An influx of middle-class NY/NJ ex-patriates into Scranton could transform that city in just a mere few years.

Contrary to popular belief on this forum I don't hate NJ. I wouldn't have headed into Hackettstown to do a photo tour if I did. I just think roughly half of the NJ forum members are rude and immature with the red dots and nasty remarks they make to me just because they don't agree with my opinions sometimes (okay, maybe ALL of the time! LOL!) On the Upstate NY forum you don't see such hostility and nastiness towards one another, nor do you see it here on the PA forum (besides the occasional CHS89 vs. WeLuvPA, scrantonluna vs. WeLuvPA, SWB vs. WeLuvPA, God vs. WeLuvPA, etc. brou-ha-has). When we disagree with one another we debate it out like adults---we don't just assign red dots and say "go away troll." Okay, I'm off my side rant now.

If I ever win the PowerBall lottery someday I'll offer $500,000 to any family willing to uproot themselves from NY/NJ to move to Scranton. Even 100 new middle-class families into the city would go a long ways towards helping it along its path on recovery.

SWB - I was quite surprised by NC when I moved here. There is greater racial tolerance here than in NJ and PA. On the gay side tho', NC and PA might come off as equivalent. NJ is more liberal on the gay issues, but if you look at the demographics of many NJ towns, they divide quite easily by race with money being a co-factor.

SWB - NC & PA can tolerate a "Will" a lot more than a "Jack". But NJ,NC and PA all can't take a loudmouth "Grace" for too long!

Looks like they were offered a raise, but it was turned down by the FOP President. The firemen also turned down a similar deal, apparently.

Kind of hard to feel bad for the unions (not that I ever did), if this is the case.

A deal in principle that would have given the city’s police pay raises totaling 19 percent over four years was scuttled by the police union’s president, city officials said Thursday.

I don't believe anything in the Times and certainly I doubt that Mr. Renda is being factually honest either. He went from $35,000 a year in salary to $80,000 in less than 4 years and he stated "I am here to do whatever the mayor wants". The Times is anti-union. They should get the raises they deserve and not just a little here and little there. If it was anyone but PD or SFD then I wouldn't think they deserve whatever they want but these people put their lives on the line to protect the rest of us and I think that playing tuff guy with their lives and their family incomes is a terrible thing. You can say what you want but Doherty is a jerk in the manner that he has treated these people.

What the hell does that mean? Its states in the article that you are backing that it was not a complete offer. Its wrong. Why worse is that to be a anti-dan your going to support the way that the police and fire are being treated in Scranton. The amount of money that has been spent on stupid useless crap in this city and the mountain of debt that has been created and we can't give the PD and SFD what they truely deserve? How much do you think that Captain Robesons life was worth? My son has more maturity then you do.

I am a union negotiator for a large police department in New Jersey. That contract is horrible. The city should not be rewarded for stalling on any raises from 2003-2007. Thats five years without any raise. All of the people in Scranton should ask themselves have you received a raise for 5 years. We would have closed down our city, no tickets, slower response time and so on. In NJ if you stall on negotiations you pay retro pay. So all them POs should be entitled to pay raises that should be payed retroactively. Wheres the FOP or PBA wake up guys. We don't pay for health benefits in my city and mostly every town in NJ. What a shame how them officers are being treated, no raise for over 5 years. They should all quit on the same day and see what happens to Scranton.

I live in Scranton and pay 3.4% taxes . . . I think we (taxpayers of Scranton) should offer a proposal of referendum and representation of fair voice as to where our taxes go . . .

These guys and gals absolutely deserve a minimum of the COLA, if not more. Does current city policy mandate that these personnel live within city borders to qualify to be considered for hire? Thus subjecting the workers (SPD and SFD) to the same taxation without representation?

Additionally, take a good look at the sewer bill vs. the water bill . . . do you find yourself sometimes paying more to get rid of the "waste" than the "drinkable?" water coming into your home?? Something is not right . . .

I' m going to have to write the local paper and see what opinion they posit regarding this issue. I'll check my piece for typos because all of us above the third grade level are aptly aware of the editorial skills of the "one" local paper . . .
